Someone please show me where it says anything about marriage being only between a man and a woman? I don’t give a fuck what your religion says about it. I’im looking at the defintion of the word itself and what it truely means. Not some religious wack jobs interpretation of it.

just going to say it…

fuck religion.

yep.

This. Like seriously take a look at the worlds problems and relgion is basically the major cause of most of it if not all.

Marriage is a religious sacrament and should not be endorsed by government.

For financial/legal purposes, civil-unions are fine.

The problem seems to be the word marriage. If this was at first brought up as ‘lawful union’ or some other term no-one would give a damn. There is no reason the government should deny same sex unions. They should get all the legal benefits a marriage gets.

You seem to think that people who have religious tenancies all blindly support every word in that book. Most people are not religious extremists hence the use of the word extremist.

Now let me change my tone to help you understand what I think is a simple way to resolve the issue…

Those bible thumping rednecks are defensive over the term marriage and don’t want to share it with gays. Lets switch the wording around to confuse these right wingers in a way that they think they’ll have won. Simply have the government change its wording to define any and all “unions” to be civil unions offering all those engaged in one to the same protections as everyone else. Then let the bible belt extremists call it whatever they want.

You can’t disagree with that now that I changed the language a bit. Right?

I support my argument by asking you to survey a few people ask them what benefits they think gays shouldn’t receive and why, then ask others if they think gay people should be allowed to “marry.”

While the government thinks that the two questions are asking the same thing I’ll bet you the common bible thumper will see a big difference and the answers will reflect that.

^True

I don’t see this as an equal rights issue as much as an issue of nomenclature.

Most people from the “elderly” generation a openly racist too… a lot has changed in the previous 80 years.

I think it’s safe to say that as time goes on, things like this gay marriage stuff will become more and more acceptable, simply because the ones saying no to it will soon die of old age.

My old professor always used to say conservatives main concerns are the 3 G’s;

Guns, God and Gays.

To protect the sanctity of marriage gays can’t get married, but The Bachelor/Bachelorette, who wants to marry a millionaire, etc are all fine? What’s the divorce rate at now? >50%?

I think us straighties are doing such a great job bastardizing marriage that any argument against gay marriage is laughable at best.

I thought all people were supposed to have equal rights in a republic? Not suppress the minority via the will of the majority.

gays will be around long after religion is extinct. i guess they’ll just have to wait.

more realistically though, our generation is so much more tolerant that it is just a matter of time before its a non-issue

this is what i was getting at. It’s just a matter of time. As people get less and less scared of their own shadows and stop relying on fairy tales to sleep at night, issues like this won’t really be…well, an issue.

Did witches used to float or sink when they were thrown in water?

And like fry said… where’s the sanctity in “marriage” anyway? How many politicians involved in this bill do you think have cheated on their wives with low-class hookers, yet think gay marriage is an absurd idea?
Even Tiger Woods, the all-american hero, is a man of many women!

Antidisestablishmentarianism much? That’s the problem with these old timer congressmen. Once our generation overtakes the senate in about 30-40 years things will change.

Ugh. I just can’t stand the right’s “moral values” bullshit. You don’t like something (gay marriage, abortion, smoking weed), don’t do it. Don’t base your legislative agenda on making sure no one else can do it either.

Marriage is between two people that love each other, why does sex matter?

Not even sure if it’s so much of that. I think it’s more so, pleasing the population which is primarily Catholic (or similar denomination). I think a lot of these decisions come based on religious exposure. I mean stem cell research? Why would this be banned at all?

see zombie thread. :brainnnns:

+1, I dont practice or follow any religion, not for that reason, but regardless.

I still want to get married.
