What items don't correlate their price premium to their functionality?

So with that logic, Ferraris and other exotics are for fashion, pure and simple, compared to say, a Hyundai Accent.

MV Augustas an Ducatis are just fancy pants fashion over a Ninja 250.

You’re comparing a sun dial watch vs a Rolex… apples to oranges.

It’s more like a GT-R sports car VS Ferrari . Both are sports cars, both are fast, one carries a much bigger premium with few drastic improvements.

Good example:

The Aeternitas Mega 4 - $2.4 million

Vs

Rolex Submariner

$7200

Both are high end watches, both will have high quality internals, high quality glass, both will tell time etc, one costs absurdly more than the other with little to gain.

Range should be ~$200 to ~$1000. Little to gain. Not really gaining “status” or extreme durability or legendary name in that range.

After that watches have a function but it’s not just to tell the time. It’s to last, be a status symbol, retain their value etc.

From ~$1000 to ~$10,000 there is (assumably) a range of some gain but then again anything over ~$10,000 starts offering just about no other value to you other than novelty features in limited production or what not.

Fashion is a function despite what everyone will say. Paying a premium for something that serves a purpose makes sense. Paying 4 dollars for a bottle of fiji water that is no different than a bottle of poland spring is different.

because Im not famous and nobody would take me seriously, including myself.

As far as watches go I like cheap ones from Walmart. They tell time just fine and I dont give a shit if I fuck them up at work because Ill only be out $10. Pretty much disposable although they do take quite a beating.

Ive got a more expensive gold Citizens watch that I got as a gift that I always forget to wear and it seems like I need to get a battery everytime I do wear it and Ive gotta take it to a jewelry store to replace the battery because its pressed on and Walmart wont do it because they dont sell that brand. Its just a hassle.

Why do you think they are called exotics?
If you need a car for transportation you sure as hell don’t need a Ferrari.
It’s a luxury item and a status symbol that also happens to be a car.
Just like a Gucci suit or an Omega watch, or cell phone encrusted in diamonds.

Sure, it’s a function.
But how many people besides pimps, CEOs and models actually need that function as opposed to simply wanting it? :rofl

It’s not as simple as being famous, but that’s a whole another topic.
Far from everything we have serves a useful function, fancy watches fall into that category. I have plenty of stuff laying around that doesn’t have much use besides making me happy for having it.
But if we are discussing functionality here as opposed to “I want it because I want it” factor, than it becomes pretty hard to justify a lot of things.

What difference does it make? It still serves that purpose and there is a price to that purpose. You ride motorcycles correct? Do you ride a harley? Why not? How many people besides professional racers need the function of a sport bike as opposed to simply wanting it?

The thread isn’t about paying money for something you don’t need, it’s about paying money for something not worth the price you’re paying. It’s a narrow distinction.

Why don’t you quit pondering and go run SNM10’s quals so I don’t have to on Monday??? :lol

J/K but I finally realized why you come up with these crazy question threads. There’s only so much twiddling-your-thumbs you ops can do when you’re waiting for shit to process. Of course last week I couldn’t wait to go IN-inside to actually get warm…

I don’t know if I’d agree with that price range.
Strictly function-wise, a quartz electronic (especially with atomic timekeeping) will tell time more reliably than any mechanical watch, and something like an atomic-solar g-shock which will always be correct and nearly indestructible can be had for less than a $100.
All the function you could ever want, if we are talking about timekeeping.
Everything beyond that is “wants”, not “needs”. You don’t need mechanics, Swiss quality, gold casing or any other fluff to know the time, it becomes fashion past that point.

Actually I ride an SV650, which is cheaper, and more functional than a Harley :lol
I thought the topic was more to do with function per cost.
If we can use wants to justify a need than sky is the limit, discussion becomes pointless. From a function standpoint nobody in US needs a motorcycle unless they live in somewhere where its warm year-round (so it can replace the car), or needs a watch that costs more than $10 to know what time it is.

You all need to stop taking it personally and pouncing on me, I am not attacking anybody’s choices in what to want or have.
We’re just talking wants vs needs here. I have want’s that don’t correspond with needs just like everyone else.

My point is the HDMI cable and fiji water are no different than their cheap counterparts, they serve no different purpose but their pricing doesn’t reflect that.

There are some clear cut examples - The HDMI cables that do IDENTICAL work with NO difference, FIJI water etc. Those are perfect for this thread. I see no point into justifying the more expensive one in those cases.

Many other items will have no “right” answer. $10 watch vs $1,000,000 watch and everything in between will have some sort of “justification” as to why it should be bought. Hence why they sell as there is a market. Purely functionality wise $10 one will tell the time just as well if not better (not accounting for long term)

Buying a brand spanking new car, or a car with 1,000 miles on it for a few a thousand less dollars. Hard to argue that the premium for the brand new car will also carry any sort of functionality with it.

Edit: capcrew beat me to it with essentially the same point.

They are different in branding and marketing, which is the extension of the whole “fashion” aspect.

If vlad is on my side you must be right. Carry on.

Actually lol’d

i hope the clothes you wear are ALL from walmart and none name brands talking like that.

more expensive things are luxuries, preference and hobbyist things, nothing more… If you make the money to support your lifestyle and enjoy what you spend your money on what else matters?

An expensive watch is stylish which correlates to luxury, preference and a hobby. You wear it because its stylish, you wear it because watch/jewelry ciollecting is a hobby, you wear it because the craftsmanship is superior to that of a bullshit $100 fossil.

Someone whos hobby is car/home audio would likely opt for better quality wiring or speakers because again, thats there hobby and preference.

Fiji water is both a luxury and a preference as it damn well does taste different then tap water… I spent $4 on a voss water the other day… Try tap water and then try Voss water, I know water technically has no taste, but the NON tatse of inpurites ext in VOSS water makes it taste/feel so much better going down.

i gaurentee every god damn person on this forum has a single article of named brand clothing… Thats called personal preference… You can obviously call it a luxury as well, as there are cheaper peices of non brand named clothing… Why spend $50 on an Armani Exchange t shirt? Because I like the brand, I like the quality, I like the material and I like the fit… Plus I like to represent the brand as I am a fan.

Tap water and bottled water are in different leagues dave. Poland springs rules. Never hadfiji, wont pay that for water.

it sure is a different league, thats the point lol… whether $1.50 water or $4 water, why arent you filling a thermus up with tap water and drinking that?

preference and luxury.

Do you no what people that arent insterested in cars as well as filthy rich people think about modding a 1990’s miata or Eclipse? lolol… fuck what other people think, if you got the bread to drink $4 water AND enjoy it, do it, if you wanna rock a $20k 18k gold presidential and have the cash for it and enjoy it, roll with it, if you wanna put a $8k turbo set up in a car that aint worth $2,500 and you enjoy it, WTF? do it… This thread kinda makes me angry lol

EVERYTHING made correlates to their price premium to their functionality otherwise people wouldnt be manufacturing those things… just because you think its rediculous doesnt mean other people share your interests. Theres an ass for every seat and thats what keeps the world going around and keeps it interesting.

I buy whatever bottled water is on sale for the lowest price by the case, drink it and reuse the bottles a few times before recycling them and getting my motherfucking nickel back.

I put a few squirts of Walmart brand energy drink shit in the bottles too.
