what makes a engine great?

in your opinion what makes a great engine. is it durability? is it ability to produce a huge amount of power with little work? it is swapabilty within a manufacture (for example honda) cheap parts? what is it talk to me.

or does it also take a good tranny to make a engine great.

-Overall capability of the block design, and its durability at extreme levels
-Overall volume taken (ie, bigger ci engine fits in a smaller space than a smaller ci engine…who cares if your engine makes more hp/liter if you can cram twice the displacement into the same space)
-Weight distribution (ie, bottom heavy is preferable to top heavy)

An abnormally high combination of good, fast, and cheap.
