What's the latest in reliable, fast, storage HDs?

Need to pick up a few new HDs (~1TB) to drop in my home PC (or NAS) in a RAID setup. Who is making solid, reliable HDs for storage? Already have SSD system drive.

They all fail, but we’ve always had good luck with Western Digital stuff here at work, and move enough to make my opinion worth more than the anecdotal evidence you get from single users saying brand XYZ sucks when they have a single drive fail.

Some people say Hitachi got it’s act together after inheriting the whole IBM deskstar (aka deathstar) line but I’m still gun-shy about their drives.

I’m running WD Caviar greens in my home server for XBMC storage.

Thanks. Was going to ask which line/color/whatever, but that was before the edit.

My 5400 rpm greens definitely aren’t the fastest drives but for basic storage they’re cheap and reliable. More than fast enough to stream 1080p 10gb mkv’s to two different computers at the same time.

I’ve always seem to have good luck with WD drives, they never fail on me.

I’d steer clear of seagate, If it means anything at all I’ve had about maybe 4-5 seagate drives fail on me after a year or so of use.

True, I suppose if I’m just doing storage it shouldn’t really matter. I do tend to move some games over there after I’m done playing them, but I rarely play games, and really do that fairly infrequently.

More storage for your rootkit’ed computers to store their malware.

Hitachi drives are great they have a large presence in the enterprise SAN market. All of our EMC CX SAN’s use Hitachi drives for SATA storage, most of the consumer drives are identical to what goes into SATA based SAN’s nowadays. Your really can’t go wrong with any vendor, I personally like Western Digital, Hiatchi and Seagate.

mostly videos of your mom fucking homeless guys for nickels, but you’re right, don’t want to leave too little space for malware.

Was looking at this green

and this black

That particular black they tout for “24x7 video streaming” with some huge MTBF but it only has a 16MB cache. Is that going to be noticeable as a storage drive?

the blacks are the fastest ones they make other than the velociraptors. Even those aren’t that fast though.
