When do I use woven fiberglass fabric instead of mat?

Lately I’ve been working on making a seat for my cafe bike. I built a mold using 1/8" plywood for the base and then used green floral foam and shaped the rear cowl with some saws and sandpaper. Then I taped over every square inch with painters tape and then covered that with aluminum tape. Next came 4 coats of wax to make sure the mold will release the fiberglass.

This brings me to where I am currently. The mold is all ready to go but I’m hesitant to start laying anything on it. I went and bought some fiberglass mat as well as some woven fiberglass cloth but can’t figure out which to use for this application. I’ve used mat before on the first seat I built and had a hard time getting even thickness over the entire piece. The cloth looks like it would work out perfectly but since I’ve never used it before, I’m not sure if I can use it for this application. Anyone who has worked with fiberglass, when do you use the cloth?

Since it’s not really a “structural” application, it’s really a matter of personal preference.

Its really just a matter of how you feel for each thing…

the cloth is better for structural pieces and things that are not going to be sanded…

its also easier to work with most of the time for flat pieces, but if you need to do comples shapes, it can be a pain in the ass to get it to lay smooth without pre fitting/tons of sanding etc…

so on a seat i would suggest using the matt, so it holds the shape better and doesnt wrinkle
