hence the D90 over the D5000
Or you can just buy a Canon and not have to worry about where the focus motor is, since they’re all the same.
The problem I had at the time I was buying my D40 was the entry level Canon comes with a complete piece of shit of an 18-55. The entry level 18-55 Nikon is light years ahead of the 18-55 Canon. That may have changed by now, but it was an accepted fact by pretty much every camera review site I read at the time. Since I had a budget for this initial camera investment going out and buying a high end piece of Canon glass to replace the useless 18-55 they were shipping their kits with wasn’t really an option, nor would I want to support a company who thinks they can get away with bundling such a poor lens just because it’s “entry level”.
The old Canon EF-S 18-55 wasn’t great, but it was better than the reviews gave it credit for.
So the D90, is kind of out my price range. However the D5000 pricing is just peachy !! Although it will graze the $1000 mark with warranty and stuff.
Ok the final battle now is between Nikon D5000 and the Canon Rebel XSI and the T2i.
Great…more research !!!
My work would love to find out what I am doing at their time…no wait…I am on commission!! Maybe someone needs to come buy a car from me, so I can afford the D90…lol !! Anybody want a Subaru as their next new car?
LOL, you are very wise at planning your time out. anyways, the competition is between the D5000 and the T2i…forget the xsi, and if you want a hook up on the cameras, go to the warden and eglinton futureshop and go to the camera section ( obviously), ask for adam or shahin, and tell them kisho sent you there. HOOK UPS FTW
As a D70s owner, I can say Im SUPER happy I went with a Nikon, a friend bought one at the same time (Olympus DSLR) and the lenses are WAY cheaper and so easy to come buy used. I have no complaints other then im still learning all the functions
I’ve been using a D5000 for a year now since starting to learn everything. It’s interface is really easy. I get lost with some of cannon’s locations for options. You don’t need a D90. From what I remember it only had a slightly better ISO range, zoom, and sharper shutter speed. Stuff you wont notice starting out, and good editing basically eliminates the difference. All of the other features are exactly the same. D90 makes you pay for luxuries like the top interface screen, better LCD screen, flash, and a better larger lens to start.
Here’s a good comparison, dude is boring as shit but it will tell you everything. The site is really good, video reviews on everything and comparisons.
If you do go that route and get a body only I’m selling my 18-55 that it comes with and a 55-200. GL, it’s great hobby.
lol, thats what i watched before I got my D5000
Fuji Instax.
Kisho, I have to say I will be using your hook-ups for sure. I wonder what the mark up is on cameras.
I looked at the T2i, the price is the same as the D90, so I guess that rules it out. Turns out my co-worker is a camera guy and he has a D50, but just a few different lens. And he is taking the exact same kind of pictures…I hope and plan to take.
So I guess, all I really need to start out with is a good body. I shall do my final research on D5000 vs XSi and then make my descision.

I shall look into that video at work tomorrow …lol !!! Ill let you know what I need, as soon as I pick something up.
Ok so here is the breakdown of prices for the Canon camera’s from Bestbuy
XS - $499 - Affordable with warranty
XSi - $599 - Good stuff with warranty
T1i- $799 - A little too far of a stretch after buying warranty and stuff
T2i- $999 (18MP…what the eff ??) I’m not spending a G note on a camera, not yet at least !!
Nikon
D3000 - $499
D5000 - $749 (I wanted this, but no longer on sale)
D90 - $1,199 Not buying at this point !
Conclusion, the Canon has two camera’s in a price range where I want to be. I just have to read about them and go touch and feel them to see what I like best and which has I need. I like the Nikon D5000, just a little out of the budget for now, but if buying that, will wait until the next sale rolls along. I’m not married to Nikon or Canon. But I am married to the features that I want.
You need to ask yourself 1 very important question… Will you actually take videos?
If not the XSi is the same camera as the T1i, just without video. So you can save yourself a bunch of money and still get the same quality pictures. The XSi actually has excellent IQ which belittles it’s entry level status. I’m assuming Nikon is the same with regards to video, but I don’t know their stuff as well like I do Canon.
you are seriously better buying a used camera…way better value and they are very reliable.
This is actually spot on. All of my current gear I’ve bought used. But the OP’er seems pretty set on buying new and a warranty.
in on this.
bought my first camera new, paid too much. second camera used and got a good deal on it.
I think it was Paulo that said he was confident that he could bludgeon a person to death with his nikon and then use it to take pictures of the body…I feel the same way about my D80. They are designed THAT well. Not to mention, most people use them pretty lightly compared to what they are build for.
I used to have a D40. It didn’t have the features that I wanted. So I got a XSi. I loved it a lot more than the D40. Unfortunately it was stolen, and now I have a T1i. I just started shooting videos, it’s nice to have.
I buy a LOT of things used. Some inexpensive electronics as well. On the expensive stuff, I tend to have bad luck. TV’s conk out, PC’s & laptop’s have conked out. So I am just playing it safe.
I just don’t know how reliable Digital SLR’s are. I don’t want to spend 5 bills on a used and then end up with a lemon and curse myself for not buying a new one for 200 more.
Lets have a look and see who is offering what in used.
And mike125k, couldn’t care less about video. I’ll attend to that later on.
somebody told me about the “nifty-fifty” lens on the Canon side, which does exactly the blur & crisp shots that I want to do and it retails for $100 new.
you can do blur/crisp with almost any lens…Just learn how to use the camera. Low f-stop, zoom in all the way and you will get the effect you want.
