cliffs:

Three guys from WCL replaced a firewire chip on a laptop that had been fried in an electrical surge. Dell wanted 1100 dollars so they decide to do it themselves. the whole operation took 8 hours and was done completely under a microscope. Story with great pictures.

We do stuff this small where I work. We’ve got microscopes all over the place for solder inspections and working on parts like this. I’ve got a board here on my desk with a Motorola uP on it with 32 pins per side, and the chip is ~ 1" square.

Great stuff, it gets even better when you get into BGAs (Ball-Gate-Array) which you have to solder inspect via X-rays.
