Why does God allow natural disasters?

Pascal’s Wager

It seems like a lot of the problem is over-simplification on both sides.

If you teach that Jesus was trying to teach that we have within us a higher consciousness than our thoughts that transcends the physical body, that’s abstract enough that it’s damn near plausible, whatever the hell it might mean. If you take this to mean that there’s a magic man in the sky watching if you’re naughty or nice, then it sounds a little like a fairy tale used to teach children to follow their conscience (high consciousness?) when deciding to do good or bad things. Then they throw on tangible rewards and punishments to simplify the motivation for doing what their higher consciousness tells them is the way to happiness/enlightenment/at-one-ness with the universe.

:uhh:

Cliffs for Nyspeed: Religion: We’re all fuckin doin it wrong.

thank you for typing that for me

when it comes down to it, If you were born in india you would be hindu and if you were born in yemen you would be muslim, and you would be defending those religions instead. the only reason you hold the beliefs you do now is because you were born into a family and society that harbors them, luck of the draw.

please explain to me how this is not correct. (or you can continue going to the chapel where instead of having a modest church building they have an extravegant million sq feet facility full of camera crews filming concerts and jumbotrons soley for your entertainment. im sure thats what God would have wanted, nevermind the legions of starving christians and other human beings in third world countries)

yep, basically this.

I prefer:

Anti-Pascal wager

Richard Dawkins argues for an “anti-Pascal wager” in his book, The God Delusion. “Suppose we grant that there is indeed some small chance that God exists. Nevertheless, it could be said that you will lead a better, fuller life if you bet on his not existing, than if you bet on his existing and therefore squander your precious time on worshipping him, sacrificing to him, fighting and dying for him, etc.”

Wow, you sure do lose a lot just so that you can believe in God. Poor me. :frowning:

“Jesus, son of man.”

You idiots realize there are tons of hot horny broads at church right? Plus church is a GREAT place to socialize and mingle with the upper side of society.

Plus it is cheap, seriously you give $5-$10 bucks to sit in a heated building where they amuse you with catchy stories, I pay more then that for crappy movies.

Children raised with morals are generally more successful and better people, period.

so if I delude myself into the fairy tale of jesus I’ll have better morals, be a better person, make more money, meet more sluts, and have a heated clubhouse to hangout at on sunday morning?

yes.

Yup, pretty cool huh.

No thanks. I’ll pass on this bogus

I know people already went at this one, but HOLY FUCKING SHIT.

This is the type of ridiculous crap that I hate about religious people’s arguments. (Not all religious people, obviously) You have got to be fucking joking with this. I can FLY to Japan, meet a Japanese person, eat Japanese food, fuck a Japanese girl, etc…

Fly me to heaven, introduce me to an angel, I’ll fuck her if she’s hot. Then introduce me to God, and you’re argument will be valid. Until then, you have the WORST argument in this thread, and need to think with some LOGIC. It’s a wonderful thing.

I don’t necessarily hate religion but I do not practice one and there are certainly pros and cons. In my mind the cons outweigh the pros by a long shot but whatever. At least in the US people more or less use it to try and make their lives, and the lives of people around them better instead of attacking others in the name of their “god”.

You people that think the way to be a good person is through religion kill me. It is up to your parents to be good role models and teach you morals and how to be a good member of society. If they use religion as a tool then great! But let it be that, a tool in proper parenting that could otherwise be the same without it as well.

So you feel bad that everyone is implying that you believe in made up stories, so you had to make up you own?

:lolno:

Wouldn’t that be rather contradictory?

If you were a person of such high morality, falsely attending service only to leech their heat, find amusement in their tales of faith, and try to pick up women, wouldn’t you be… a bit lacking in the morals department?

I would somewhat agree with his statement only I do not believe religion has to play a role.

I’m an atheist who honestly believes the world would be a lot better if more people followed the teaching of pretty much any of the major religions.

Way too many people in this world only think about themselves and the core of pretty much every religion boils down to thinking of something beyond yourself.

“You guys are gross for praying on women with loose morals…but there are tons of horny women at church”

The use of “idiots” in this thread is mind numbingly out of place.

His statement is about as factual as saying since you were born a black man, you’ll never be successful, whites are more successful. Except there are probably statistics that could back up what I said.
