I brought my talon in to a shop the other day to get a rear bearing replaced. Now I’ve only owned the car for about 5 months now. Figured it to be pretty routine shit, until the mechanic calls me back and tells me that the previous jackass WELDED the cv to the bearing. Why in god’s name would anyone do that?
Is that even possible? Or is the mechanic pulling your leg?
That don’t sound very possible.
The only thing I can think of, is that somebody welded the diff together, which is what your mechanic might have meant.

Its totally possible, I owned a shop for a long time and saw some scary stuff over the years. An idiot and his welder is a very powerful thing. Depending what type of bearing it is, this could be a huge PITA to fix, and the person responsible should promptly have their genitals removed as to not further contaminate the gene pool.
There is a lot of people out there that should have that done. Stoopid peeple shoold knot bread. ;D
for the cv to be welded to the bearing it would have to be welded to the inner race which is kinda hard to get at when the end of the axle is in the way…if they welded to the outter race the axle would not turn at all…seems like the axle is prolly rusted in the splines…I had an eclipse once where I could not get the axle to come out of the hub splines had to remove the axle and the knuckle all at once and replace the whole thing
With out seeing it all we can do is speculate, but there are several ways someone could weld a bearing in. If its a pressed bearing someone could easily weld the outer race into place where the C-clip goes. As someone else mentioned the splined hub could be welded to the CV axle. If its an assembly and someone is really freaking dumb they could weld the assembly to the backing plate, which in some cases would make it impossible to remove. There are quite a few options for someone to be really dumb.

hahah, wow. so we should institute a policy. you have to pass some sort of test that determines that youre allowed to use a welder or not. you can seriously do some beautiful work or totally ruin a vehicle with a welder
it could of spun and looked like it was welded,seen that alot
metal on metal contact in the bearing surfaces could have also “welded” the pieces together.

I wish I had taken pictures. It was in fact welded to the bearing with the fattest string of beads I’ve ever seen.
