Windows 10 Thread: Phones, Surface & PC (Formerly Nokia Phones)

I watched these this morning…Funny. Hopefully I’ll get to mess around with some of these phones.

It has definite potential but they went a little too Apple-like out of the gate. Once they get some of the basic functionality that they had in the old WinMo to go with the slick new UI I will def give it a shot. Another legit contender in the competition can only help the consumer

Bump! (because the BB thread reminded me)

Who’s using Windows Phone right now? Probably not too many of you but for those that are, what are your impressions?

I currently have 2 developer Nokia Lumia 920 phones and one AT&T 920. Nokia has GREAT customer service:

Personally I think it’s awesome. Would I prefer to be using a next-gen version of Nokia’s MeeGo? Yes. The multitasking, UI and open platform made that OS my favorite. But Windows Phone 8 has won me over with its speed and reliability. It’s hard to explain just how fast and fluid it is until you actually use it for some time.

If anyone has any specific questions let me know.

LZ’s questions from another thread:

Email works great, but I haven’t figured out how to get it to put outgoing messages in my out-box when using IMAP. It’s something that isn’t too big a deal (you can send a copy to your inbox as an option) but I’ll look deeper into it later. There is a threaded option for emails which helps keep conversations in line (much like threaded texts) but I wasn’t interested in getting used to it so I disabled it. One cool thing is that Outlook-specific things (like meetings, etc.) that a client might send me are formatted properly since the phone is Microsoft. I use Thunderbird at home and these messages only appear as text & code jumbles and you can’t really read them.

Maps seem perfect to me. Haven’t really used them too extensively for directions, although I have used Nokia City Lens when in a city that I don’t know and it’s very cool.

My phone hasn’t crashed once. The only time it’s been off since I received it was when I’ve flashed the device with different firmware to test some frequencies in this area. Reports of crashing phones have all been related to branded / locked phones which I don’t use. But it’s easy reset the phone, or if you keep having problems (which some have) you can re-flash or recover the device with the built in menu. While this resets the phone to factory specs, the phone also backs up your apps / contacts / calendar / etc. so the process is mostly a short inconvenience.

Battery life is great. I use the phone heavy throughout the day and it gives me a full days worth of charge. Exactly what I’d want & expect. If you notice the battery draining too much there is a menu to disable or select which applications work in the background. So if I have Urban Spoon constantly updating depending on my location and I don’t really need it, I can disable it in this menu and it will remain off until I open the app again. The phone will even tell you if it’s draining quickly and suggest / link you to this menu when you first start using it.

I can take screen shots too for those that are interested.

Does it have Lotus Notes available for an App?

big problems with not allowing to end calls, besides the lack of apps i really really hope these windows 8 devices are successful, i sell to business customers and mobile office is a great feature

Notes Traveler, although I don’t use it.

Have you experienced this yourself? I’ve never had this issue and have never read about it?

And I can’t really see a lack of apps. In fact, most of the apps look better as they all try to emulate the “metro” design and flow very nicely with the rest of the device. I have every app I could ever want.

Office is awesome. It’s lighting fast and editing complex excel documents is a breeze. Skydrive integration is fantastic too.

Yes personally seen it happen on multiple devices (Vzw htc and Nokia)

I’d guess it was another dumb branded firmware issue, if at all. I haven’t read anywhere that it’s a problem but then again I’m not on EVERY forum out there, lol.

I’ve been hearing from a few co-workers that with the new windows OS (for computers as well as phones) that you’ll be able to link up all your devices similar to the way that you can with Macs, have you heard anything about this Josh?

I.E. I have a computer with windows 8, I have an xbox, and I get a windows phone. Can I link these devices together to share content between them, or control media played off my xbox through my phone or through my computer? I’m up for a phone upgrade this summer and trying to decide between a windows or an android phone.

I don’t have any experience with it, but from what I hear that’s the idea. Although I have read some complaints that integration between the phones & windows 8 could be better. But then again things are still new with updates coming regularly.

I’m using WIN7 and there isn’t any real integration.

You can definitely control your xbox with this: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/xbox-smartglass/b057fbe2-ceb1-470f-a7fe-09c862ca6dd9

We are testing the red HTC Win8 phone here. It is pretty slick and I am an iPhone fan boy.

Otherwise known as an iFag.

lol I kid, I kid.

I’m selling one of my developer devices if anyone here is interested: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251225851269

Took a few pictures at an aquarium the other day. These were in low light with the phone on full auto except flash, and through thick glass. The first jellyfish are actually only about the size of a US dollar coin. Nothing has been edited at all.

(Keep in mind the forum compresses the images so they might appear smooshed. Right click, view image for the full resolution.)

Sky shark!

For any avid twitter users, the twitter app was finally updated today to be on par with Android and iOS offerings… Its a miracle to me lol

It’s MUCH better than the original, but there are a LOT of Twitter apps out there to choose from if the basic one wasn’t good enough for ya.

I tried a few of the popular free ones in the Marketplace but they didn’t really offer any more functionality than the original app, which was very limited lol :s

Do you have any in mind?

Not off hand, but I tried one of the paid ones with “enhanced” functions and it was good. I liked being able to save Twitter images to my phone, something the basic app doesn’t do.

Found out I’m eligible for an upgrade, was interested in the Nokia Lumia 920. Anyone have any experience with that unit?

That’s what I’m using now (see posts above) what do you want to know?
