gonna pick up some winters soon. i think im gonna get michelin arctic alpines. anyone have any experience with these tires? also, higher profile and skinnier tires are better in winter arent they? so could i go to say a 185/70 on my stock wheels?
This is a debate id like to get into.
I have people telling me the skinier the better and others tell me fatter is better.
Which is true and why?
I just have Blizacks 205/60 and there fine.
well i figure, why do people where snow shoes? it increases the surface area and disperses the weight so you can stay on top of the snow. now, if you are driving a car in snow and want traction you want more weight with a smaller surface area so your tires sink into the snow. this makes the treads grab onto it better, hence skinnier tires. obviously this is for deeper snow. for a light dusting i dont think it would make much difference.
thanks philip! where is a good place to buy the nokians? i cant seem to find em
I have used 280Z 14" steel wheels for years with 195/70 x 14 Blizzaks for my winter setup on the 240SX (been driving them since 1989). Gives approx. same overall circumference as the stock 15" setup. No clearance problems unless you have the larger ABS calipers/rotors.
