Today I installed my new 81.5mm 9.8:1 wiesco pistons and h beam rods into my freshly honed motor to find out that the piston bottom hits the oil squrters and forces them into the crank. This would not let the crank rotate freely. I called Wiesco right away and they forgot to put a notice in the box with the pistons that ur supposed to bend the oil squirters to obtain a .040" clearance from the crank. I guess they just expect you to know this??
I did this but I also had to grind a small divit into my piston bottom to clear the squirter. I weighed all the pistons and each one is weighing evenly so no issue there now. After all this work everything is cleared and no more hitting. Just thought I would share my little engine building experience with everyone.
u should’ve been able to bend them w/o having to touch the piston at all
u also could’ve just removed and plugged em, u dont need squirters w/ forged rods/pistons
good info tho
I’d rather do that than make notches in the bottom of the cylinder walls to fit rods into a d series lol. Good thing you caught it now though.
Grinding the piston was not necessary. You could have just moved the squirter over a little bit with a slim flat tool like a screwdriver. .039" = 1mm…You need 1mm of clearance.
thats huge in motor speak fool.
indeed very good thing haha
I did move the squirter over b/c it was lined right up with the solid part of the piston bottom, i have about 1mm of clearance like you said . I only took off a very little of the piston base b/c on the downward stroke the base was touching the squirter.
Sure for bearing clearances…not spacial considerations.
It was real ify with the down stroke it was touching
word, at least u checked lol.
def lol
i probably would have removed them. They are of very little benefit anyway
With turbocharged applications and high compression your pistons are gonna get excessivly hot so i figured get all the extra help you can get. Why take out something when its only gonna help? Even if its just a little.
silly, everyone knows you have to bend them
they would have clearanced them selves
right… lol
haha yea after 2 rotations and the squirters broke and ruined my cylinders, pistons, crankshaft and bearings… No big deal
with all the windage and oil mist spraying around in the bottom end of the engine the squirters dont do very much good. Thats why honda doesnt use them anymore. I dont really think anybody uses them much anymore. For a boosted app i would be more concerned with eliminating sharp edges and hotspots in the piston tops, which will keep them cooler and reduce detonation. If you want, ceramic coatings would reduce the piston temperatures dramatically.
what are the details of the build
don’t sass me woman hehe.
