“Does turning the heat on really help cool an engine?”

Yes. The excess heat goes into the heater core, which is just a tiny radiator, pulling the temperature of the coolant down. Of course, it will rapidly overheat the interior of the car—and you. If doing this means getting to the top of that hill without boiling over, it might get you to someplace that can check the cooling system for problems. If you need to use the heater frequently to reduce coolant temperatures, either there’s something wrong with your cooling system, or you’ve seriously overloaded your vehicle.

ETC ETC.

I’m a car noob and for some people this is second nature, but I got a lot out of this. Just wanted to share

holy shit really!

in my old tempo i had in hs i would have to do that. it sucked in the summer, but in the winter i was just glad i had heat

I have used the ole turn on the heat trick many times

it’s like having a 2nd radiator

your heater core is basically just a mini radiator with a fan behind it.

back in the day when I used to top my car out, I would put the heat on for extra cooling

And then people bitch about how this is NYOT.com

Not all knowledge shared here has to be advanced shit.

Funny I just learned this a few weeks ago when my car was overheating and did some reading up on the subject.

my saturn overheated slightly at dunville. I cranked the heat on and the temp dropped right back to normal.

I know this method all too well.

When I was a kid my parents had a 440 chrysler that used to overheat and we had to crank the heat when it was hot out. Sucked.

Town and country wagon. It was huuuuge.

Kevin Williams had his heat CRANKED last summer, when he was racing Rich. I thought I was going to pass out.

That’s awesome, always wondered if this was 100% legit. Also, turning on your running lights in all rx7 models until '95 brings down the temp your fans turn on. Does anyone else know of a car that does this? It’s an accidental electric anomaly I’m pretty sure.
