Four arrested in burglary spree
By Maki Becker NEWS STAFF REPORTER
Updated: 04/07/07 6:55 AMAmherst police Friday said they have arrested four people in the theft of copper wiring, tools and electronic components valued at $50,000.
The case began early Wednesday, when Officer John Fiore stopped a van for following a car too closely and having a faulty muffler, in front of a Verizon office at 2775 Millersport Highway.
Fiore questioned a man and woman inside the van, who admitted they were planning to burglarize the Verizon office, police said. A search of the van turned up burglar’s tools, copper wire believed to have been stolen from another location and walkie-talkies, Amherst Assistant Chief John C. Askey said.
Amy L. Block, 28, of the Town of Tonawanda, who was driving, and Daniel J. Harzynski, 18, of Buffalo, were charged with possession of burglar’s tools, attempted criminal trespass, conspiracy, criminal possession of stolen property, attempted grand larceny and unlawful possession of a radio. The latter charge is for the walkie-talkies, which are illegal when used in a crime such as a burglary, Askey said.
Later Wednesday, Amherst police went to a Mang Avenue address in Kenmore, where they arrested Gary Woods, 42, of the Mang address, and Tanya Harzynski, 48, identified as Daniel’s mother, who lives with Daniel in Buffalo.
Search warrants were executed at the Harzynskis’ home and at Woods ’ house and police found more tools, electronic components and computers.
Woods and Tanya Harzynski were charged with conspiracy, attempted grand larceny and unlawful use of a radio. Tanya Harzynski was also charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Askey said the investigation continues.
