Xbox 360 Live situation

So my xbox is setup upstairs and this is where I always keep my laptop, which led me to start thinking one day. I did some reading and people have used their laptops as wireless feeds for XBOX LIVE via an ethernet. My problem is that I am running Vista and am unsure of how to tell Vista to send internet out once it is received from my Wireless. Any suggestions?!

Cat 5 crossover cable to your laptop to xbox 360. Set your xbox 360 ip to:

192.168.1.100, mask 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.1.1 and dns 192.168.1.1.

Go into Control Panel > Network Connections and select the wireless network adapter on your laptop and go to properties. Go to the Sharing tab and check the box “Allow other computers to share this connection” and make sure you select Local Area Connection in the box. If your xbox is on, go to start and in the search box type cmd and hit enter.

type ping 192.168.1.100 and see if you get a response. if you do you should see live connect.

cat 5 crossover and ethernet are different I assume?

CAT6 works. And you shoudlnt have to change your Xbox IP. Just plug it in, enable sharing, and your xbox will do the rest.

Yes, the way an ethernet cable is setup if you connect a NIC to a NIC, tx/rx will be going from the same wire to wire, hence the need to use a crossover which swaps the tx/rx so you can connect 2 devices going tx-rx as normal.

I am not sure if Vista hands out IP addresses on the ethernet port to the Xbox. Chances are you need to statically assign the Xbox 360.

Yep.

Are you guys sure a crossover is needed? My brother in law got his working through internet connection sharing and I know he doesn’t have any crossover cables. The kid wouldn’t even know what one was.

Ya. PC to Xbox is a crossover. Ive done this setup before.

Nope boxxa, no need for crossover cables. Im running a straight cat6 cable, and vista. Vista gives the XBOX an IP address so no static IP needed.

so this cable can be had for cheap?
stores that sell it?(assuming electronic stores)

Vista install
Use Laptop as Wireless card for Xbox 360
Connect to wireless network
Go to Start Menu
Go to Control Panel
Go to Network and Internet
Go to Network and sharing center
In Tasks bar go to Manage Network Connections
Right Click on your Wireless icon
Go to Properties
Click the Sharing Tab
Click the first box
Click OK
Then hook up your Xbox 360 to your laptop with an Ethernet cable
Your all set to play on Xbox LIVE

hope it helps

after clicking properties, there is no “sharing” tab?

I just tried with a xbox 360 and my new laptop and will not link up with a straight through.

How new is your xbox? Could the new model auto sense?

Check to make sure your account is an administrator and you have the ability to do it on your version of Vista. I am not sure which versions have what features.

My Xbox has the new motherboard from October of 07… that might be why.

So most/all newer Xboxes will be just plug and play?

Mine does, so I assume so.

You wouldn’t need a cross over if the PC had a gig NIC card

Ya but doesn’t the xbox have to have a gigabit network adapter too?

it was my understanding that this was only true if you were going gig to gig port.

nah just one end needs to be gig

At least from my experience…Its actually annoying because I have white box network devices with 4 nics and two are gig and two are just 10/100 and moving cables around sucks when you forget the two gig auto flip.

I am going to try this right now on a server I have that has a gig interface.
