I am lookin into buying a 180sx but it already has everything done to it ie. bodykit, turbo ca18det. I don’t want to buy an already done car and be able to do nothing to it. Is it possible to put the SR20DET engine in a RHD car? Any and all input is welcome.
so… you want a car with a ca18det… then want to swap for a sr20det…
Why? Ca is fine if you do up the engine properly.
Why not just buy a usdm s13 with a sr20 or ca18 already installed, and do that up?
wouldnt want to buy an already turboed ca18det, that would leave nothing for you to do
just wait til GT gets here
I think what he is saying is that:
He is looking in to buying a 180 that he found already, which has a body kit and the motor done up and all ready to go. But what he really wants is a 180 that has nothing done to it… But by the looks of it he is going to settle for the one that he has found and then is intending to do a CA to SR swap.
As for the question about the SR going in to a RHD car… What do you think they come out of??? RHD of course. So yes you can. But you should do a lot more research before getting this car in the first place.
you sound as though your lost.
i would reword your question so it actualyl makes sence…
and do a bit of reasearch before you return.

Alrite, I know nothing. Complete noob. Ok? Ok. I am looking into bringing over a 180sx it has a complete turbo setup. I would like to put my own mark on this car but everything under the hood (within reason) has been done. I was wondering if it could be possible to swap in the SR20DET. And what the hell am I supposed to be reading up on?
ok well first. you said nothing about importing in your initial post.
second. just because the ca18det has been built up doesnt mean you cant do anything to it.
also. why swap a perfectly good turbo engine for another one? it seems like a totally useless thing to do.
unless you have an abundance of parts liying around to build a crazy sr20 (which is the only reason i can think of to swap one in to an already turboed car) then why not stick to the stock engine?
or better yet if you want a car thats got nothing done to it then go find a car from over here and do the work from there.
lastly…
do some reasearch into what you want to be isntalling and the engines your talking about. both engines are stock turboed from the factory and both engines fit in the car you are refering to
if you had researched into the cars your interested in you would have already answered your own questions.

Man, there is ALWAYS stuff to do to your car. There are tons and tons of things you can do. If you buy a car with a solid engine and kit etc, you can just improve. Like GT said, research. You could buy that stock (or slightly modified ca) and build it up like mad. You could re-do all the suspension setup, or add to whatever it has currently. There are tons of interior things you could do to your car. Seats, stereo, if you want to RICE just buy some ICE for your car. There are tons of rims, tires, break upgrades, exhaust, paint… etc etc etc etc etc…etc…
Buying a stock car and supin it up is by no means cheap. So if you have money to waste and feel that you want to start from scratch then do so. However if you have the option where you can buy a slightly moded car and spend your money improving on it, I would think that is a better option.
As for importing, well I am not 100% sure, but you will probably spend alot of cash on insurance, and importing fees etc. Why not find a 240 with a SR here or in the US and save yourself the hassle.
Anyway, just research, look around and plan what you ultimatly want from your car…

Thanks everybody. I guess I was just into the whole idea of going fast and not thinking about anything else if U know what I mean. Has anybody/know somebody that has imported a 180sx from Japan? There is no reason to believev insurance qould be higher. when I contacted my insurance company, Pilot, they said they had never registered a RHD vehicle and would give it a yearly valuation based on price paid for the vehicle. Just wondering if anybody has heard any different.
Just a heads up… if they catch wind of any modifications, or track driving, Pilot will drop you so fast you wont know what happened. They did to me. Took me the better part of a year to get out of the mess they left me in, but at least now I have a clean record again.
What happened???
If you’re big on getting a 180 with a CA and swapping to the sr20, why not just get a 180 with a redtop stock?
anywho, there are 9 trillion threads on every 240 forum on importing, and Silvia / Skyline JDM !!!111!!!oneone!!!111
to be honest, if you want speed…and not a novelty item you want to impress your friends with.
Buy a good condition 240sx coup/HB, and SR it. Save yourself a ton of cash…that could/SHOULD be put into go fast.
I just read a post that said the guy was pretty sure that the red top years were 91 to 94 but he wasn’t sure. Is this the case? The one I am lookin at is a 90 but I don’t know for sure which engine. It doesn’t say it on the page and I don’t know how to read Japanese. I just assumed it was the CA18DET.
most likely the cars that you can import rite now are 89s and 90s if you are planing to import it next year (since it’s passed the 15 year mark)
I don’t think you can import any 91s and up
I asked them what the policy was on track racing because I belonged to a car club which went to the track, and I told them I was looking into getting a new suspension. I got my cancellation in the mail two weeks after the date my coverage apprently ended.
So after many calls to Pilot and the head of the underwriting department, I got the cancellation off my record. … long story… I posted the whole thing here somewhere, I’ll see if I can find it.
Yes you are correct. No offense, but you are not ready to import yet, unless you don’t mind getting screwed, and wishing you had done something differently later. Like Greg said, you need to do a lot more research into this first. You need to know the features of the cars for each year, what to look for and what to avoid. Strengths and weaknesses of each car etc. Check out www.importconcern.ca and read up on the basics… if you have any advanced importation questions, you can pm me.
I know that. I was wondering if the guy was rite. That the red tops didn’t come out till 91.
Import Concern is where I got all my info from. I know all about the importation part. I am asking about the car and insurance.
and how do U get ready to be screwed???
How old are you? Most companies wont even look at you if you’re under 25, or charge you an arm and a leg… however there are a few options. If you have been with the same insurer for a long time they may grant you some leeway. Once you have 10 years driving experience, you can get specialty seasonal insurance as long as you have another car as your primary driver (or at least they think it is).
Don’t forget, however, that any insurace company you have not been straight with regarding mods etc… it’s very easy for them to refuse you coverage after an accident and they inspect your car.
