This is such an awesome project! I look forward to seeing the progress.

Aaron, the car is really a Renault 9 (look it up). It is a French car, 100%. AMC reached out to Renault in the early 80’s at the time to help try and save them. Renault then formed a partnership with AMC, where they required a partial ownership stake, and in return, sent the tooling of the Renault 9/11 to the States, so AMC workers could assemble it in Kenosha, WI, and then sell it as an AMC/Renault…the cars that followed in the wiki article are news to me. I am not sure how they are all connected.

Either way, our tentative plan is as follows…

Re. the new car we just got, aside from needing all of the fluids replaced, as well as some pads/rotors (which we got 3 brand new sets of with the purchase), the car is good to go, absolutely turn key. The paint is a little faded in some spots, so we will at some point look to repaint it. The goal is to make a GTA clone out of it (visually, that is, ie. wheels, body skirting, interior, etc.), but will keep the original drivetrain and suspension/brakes for now. With 61K orginal miles, it just runs/drives too good.

I will then pull the motor/trans. and susp./brakes off the GTA, and keep them all until a later date. The rest of the valuable parts from the GTA will also be pulled off and stored, and we will likely then send off what is left to the yard…

The car should be delivered in about a week or so, and when it does I will clean it up, and get some photos…

when you go to the “America” section of Renault 9 it just redirects you to the page I was looking at to start.

regardless, more different cars are always a cool thing to see on here even if it’s the predecessor to some of the worst rental cars ever.

very cool! looking forward to progress.

Seen this on craigslist today and thought of you http://buffalo.craigslist.org/cto/4321582056.html

Oooooh. I like this feature.

Wow, that is so cool! I should prob. update my thread here, huh? The '83 MT Edition got driven a fair amount last summer, and will be driven a lot this summer as well. A lot of last summer was spent making sure that after 20 years of being stored, it could be made road worthy again. Really, the car needed just basic maintenance. We did the following: All fluids (engine oil, gear oil, coolant, brake fluid, etc.), belts, radiator, brakes, hoses, tires, blah, blah. The car runs terrific, and is a lot of fun to drive. Well, mostly in the sense that the few (and I do mean few) people that actually know what is is, get really nutty when they see it. These cars almost literally disappeared overnight when they left the US market. I am so glad we nought it. The white GTA was thoroughly cleaned in/out, and will be a permanent spare for either parts, or if the urge ever comes, to make road worthy again one day…prob. just for parts though…more updates/photos to come in the spring…

On thing is apparent…Joe is TERRIBLE at updating his threads haha

Do you have pics of this rare find?

Nothing good, but I will take some and post them soon…

sweet pictures

So, here is an update a couple years later…

The '83 MT Edition was made a reliable daily driver for the summers after some much needed preventative maintenance. It runs and drives great. The '87 GTA has been much cleaned up and has sat as a potential parts cars whenever anything would be needed. So far, I have not needed to pull a part off it…

Here are some photos from this past w/e…ironically, the first photos I have taken of either of them…crazy, I know…

Anyways, after my father passed in late 2013, it was tough finding enthusiasm for this project…too many memories…so I have decided to put both cars and all my spare parts on eBay as a package deal…if anyone is interested, here is the ad, or just reach out to me here…

I’m more impressed with the GTA parking job between those two buildings

They built the garages around the car.

And the eBay ad…

Why sell them as a package and not separately?

Because the white GTA is basically a parts cars as I see it. The floors and undercarriage have a good amount of rust, and I would not sell it as a road-going car…selling as a package gives the new owner of the '83 an arsenal of parts in the form of a complete parts car…keep in mind, parts availability is a bit scarce for these nowadays…

The alternative is that no one gives me what I am looking for, and I keep them both and all my spare parts…it is an all or nothing sale, or I should say that is what I am looking for…if someone just wants the '83 and is willing to pay me enough for it, then I’ll keep the GTA as backyard art…as you can see, it really is not in my way…

My grandmother in Italy has a Renault 4 to carry her wine barrels and materials. Then my aunt here had a Renault 7 which seemed like a hot commodity growing up as a kid.
