1998 cobra build thread

how much boost is this running? stock motor? idk if you posted that or not

idk about boost for sure, 8-10psi. stock motor. it will stay at this power level until i can afford to rebuild. if i can find a killer deal on an 03/04 short block id do that too, but i really wanna keep this aluminum block.

at the moment i need to do a throw-out bearing tho, ugh. i probly wont go to the track until after i do that. i walked a few cars that trap over 110 pretty badly last night, so i should be right around 115ish. super conservative tune too.

until i can afford a real transmission and build the rear end im gunna keep rocking the stock wheels and tires. so its gunna suck from a launch for a while too. but id rather do some burnouts for a while instead of breaking more shit.

Nice… perfect timing too… my Nittos are showing cords… lots of them.

so i made it to bald turbo freak’s dyno and got the tune figured out pretty well. its a land and sea dynomite chassis dynamometer that is comparable to a mustang dyno. he said typically his numbers are 15% lower than a dynojet. except on the dyno i had a misfire at ~6200rpm. i changed plugs on the dyno and gapped em down to .030. they were at .034. still had the miss-fire for everypull except for one of em. the next day i checked the plugs only to find out two or em were at .036. so i never gapped those two plugs down; oops. but either way, the tune is solid and my AFRs are good.

id like to thank Rick for helping me out with the tune. i plan on heading back to the BTF mountain to get my forged internals when the time comes!

this is the cal i drove home on:

i took some pulls with a lightly modded c5 z06 the other night and it was really close, tons of fun. i plan on heading to the track this week, either tomorrow or friday.

i definitely need tranny number three soon too; whines noticeably in 1-3-5th, and in neutral with the clutch out. time to save up for tko600.

looks good, I’m tuned now too, wouldn’t mind some pulls

ill be at the track this week, not sure which day yet tho. looks like wednesday is supposed to suck, so probly friday.

I’ll be at the track friday for the MOMs race myself

probly not gunna head out for a test and tune on a day where theres gunna be a billion people. id like to get more than 3 runs in.

went to the track last night. pulled a best of 12.63@119.5. 2.19 60ft on stock sized tires. only mods are the blower, 3.73s, and X pipe. shes a bit of a pig now too, 3610 with me in it.

according to my weight and trap speed, im making about 480whp using those hp-guesstimators. here are a few vids and pics:

im all done with it for now until i can get another replacement transmission.

so i got the car down to 12.07@119.8 with a 1.98 60ft on 235 DRs. the next pass i cut a 1.92 60ft, definitely gunna be an 11 second pass, but i hit second and my clutch started slipping. its the stock clutch i think so it was on borrowed time.

and speaking of borrowed time, a recent compression test (after bursting a valve cover gasket, hmm) revealed cylinders 6 and 7 to be low. cylinder 6 was almost 60% too low, haha.

and i got some serious smoke coming out of the PCV lines, so id say its time for some forged pistons. im almost 100% certain its some fubar’d ringlands, as theyre almost always the first thing to go. plan on doing just a regular rebuild with a some wisecos and either manley or K1 H-beams in the teksid block, a billet geared oil pump, and some head studs. stock B heads. maybe a short runner IM. KISS. i may spring for an Aluminator short block. depends on what is damaged when i pull the motor apart.

end goals are 650whp or 135mph traps, whichever comes first. goal ETs are 10.XX. i need a ton of practice launching this thing. i think i can do all that with the extra 3.2" blower pulley, but i might need a 3.1 or 3.0 to make the power id like to. should be 17-20ish psi or so. i plan on throwing some water meth injection on top of this system as well. gotta lots of work a head of me and its gunna be an expensive winter, but boy howdy its gunna be sweet.

boy howdy is right!

AWESOME!!!

a fast sn95… no wayyyy lol

thanks for the kind words, i think? ha.

there is a legitimate chance the car might not even be out next summer, as the transmission and rear end all need regular maintenance work, on top of needing some serious upgrades too. the transmission is slowly welding itself together, the trac-lok is SHOT, and i need to upgrade everything to 31 spline anyways. i need to get the stock 98 cobra wheels widened… theyre all “might as well while im in there…” kinda mods. so, as it stands right now i have about 7k in parts spoken for. ha.

should be pretty fast when its all done. hoping to swap in some tubular components while the engine is out, id like to get it as close to 3k lbs with no driver as i can.

bust out the credit card!

Id put in a new trc-lok and call it a day for the rear and wait till you actually break that before you worry about it unless you have some extra $$$ to burn. Can’t wait to see some progress! What trans are you going to do?

its only a 100 bucks for new clutch disks and all the bearings and stuff, its like 400 for a brand new 03/04 cobra diff and some after market 31 spline axles. ill probly just rebuild mine and save the loot just like you suggested.

honestly i dont know what i wanna do about a tranny. im actually thinking built t5 > tko600 > t56. t5 is the lightest and can still take the power but im not sure about how long it will last. im up in there air bigtime. i know for sure it wont be a built t45 or 3650. i cant stand this integrated bell housing bullshit.

Yeah I rebuilt my trac-lok recently and am still running a 28 spline setup. Well my axles are custom 31 outers 33 shaft and 28 inners(figure that out haha) but it has held up great and I go high 1.4s low 1.5s on a IRS setup. I am not too familiar with the t5 or tko trans, T-56s seem to now be breaking left and right where years ago I would have deff said to go that route. My new built one feels amazing but only time will tell.

well thats good to know about the trac-lok. ur car is significantly lighter than mine (what are you 2.7k-ish?), so i wouldnt imagine you having problems with ur driveline once its healthy. a T5 is a solid 30lbs lighter than my other mentioned options.

they were kind words…
