I bought a ds650 that would only run when push started. We started it and I ran it through it gears up to about 45 mph. It stalled a bunch and ran like crap but it did run.
After tearing into it, the starter clutch is shot. It had no fluid in the case and the starter spins fine but the clutch does not engage. How do I change this? There is a BMW starter clutch that is a direct replacement for half the cost. Has any one actually done this?
It has an aftermarket CDI box with a switch on the bars for MAPx10. People either swear by them or swear at them. Whats your opinion on after market boxes compared to stock. This is a trail beater, not a full race quad that I need every hp possible.
What plug should I run, what is the stock one?
What oil should I use?
Can am forums are a hit or a miss. Never a real solid answer or diagrams like the blaster forums have.
check that the Motor is in time, and the valves are in spec.
3)isn’t that a centrifugal stater clutch? Try to clean it/ free it up. Also ensure the keyway did sheer off or go missing.
my ngk book calls for a NGK 7162
use a NON synthetic 5w40 what ever the hell you want oil.
Sounds like a fuel or valve problem. I had a 06’ Honda CRF 250 and that fcker would eat valves for lunch. Same symptoms, only can be push started then didn’t run well. There also was a time that i somehow managed to get water in the gas every single time I washed it. Would not kick start then when it finally started by pushing it there was nothing but pops and bogs until I drained the carb of fuel.
about the aftermarket CDI. In the Mx scene people won’t use them unless it’s on a built motor set up with supporting mods to handle the higher rpm limit. I personally would not run it as I can’t see it doin a whole lot by itself.
I’ve been running a dynatek cdi box on my Kawasaki since 2006. For my quad it adjusted a bunch of things so it was a great upgrade.
If all it does is raise rev limiter and add a couple degrees of timing then I’d probably not get it.
carb and jets are clean
I just read to check the timing marks on the gears… they should be parallel with the top of the jug.
Yes, its a one way starter clutch. its fried and a common problem with these. I tore it down last night. the starter spins and hits everything fine, but the clutch is not grabbing the flywheel/crank and spinning it over.
I ordered two plugs
ill get oil this weekend.
I need to get this starter fixed because push starting this pos is really starting to suck.
I ordered the special tool to remove the starting clutch. itll be here next week.
I tore it down. The one way sprag/clutch is shot. That is why the starter just spun. I ordered the removal tool to take it off and try to clean it. If I can get it to start a couple times after cleaning, I know it needs a new clutch and ill shell over the $300 bucks for it. FFFFFFFF
have new front bearings, plugs, fluids, oil and air filters. Monday I’ll get back on it and hopefully it cranks over. Then I can start chasing the issue that makes it run like crap. The battery took a 2amp charge and is sitting at 12.4 v. Ill clean all the cables and terminals also.
I found one broken ground, no idea what it was but ill fix that too. Man I hope this thing comes alive. It should be a monster
Not sure if this helps of not but my Polaris will run like crap if the battery is dead, it overcharges like (20+ volts) and it messes with the ignition system and blows out every light bulb. I have to replace the battery every couple years.
