I read the same thing. The battery took charge and was reading 12.4 v. I think that’s ok, right.
I would think it should be fine then. Mine would only charge to around 9 volts if I remember correctly.
I tore the clutch off. Pretty neat part. it was not engaging the way the motor needed to spin but it did the other way. So i flipped the clutch in the hob and it spins the motor over now. Not sure if that is ok or not but it did engage and spin it over. I tossed the plugs in it and replaced the cover, it clicked the starter but wouldnt turn over. I put the battery in it and backed it with my jump box. It barely spun the motor over. So I think its worth getting a new battery just to make sure its not the issue.
The clutch looked fine, little bit of ware but not lips or burn marks. so Im not sure how it works or doesnt in this case. The new BMW clutch should be here next week. Ill put it in the right way and get a new battery. Man I really want this thing to fire up.
@Choda did you check the valve clearances to rule them out?
No but the more I read the more that’s a common problem. I’ll add it to the list. Any idea what they should be?
Did you ever talk to my buddy Rob. He replaced his starter so maybe he can give an idea of how its superposed to work.
.004in min .006in max for the intake. they will likely be so tight on the intake side you can’t get a feeler gauge in there.
have any of you done valve adjustment on these engines or have to tools to?
With shims instead or rockers its a bigger pain but not that hard. Set top dead center to a line the marks on the cam sprockets. Use feeler gauge to check clearance. Pain in the ass part is if you need to change a shim. You’ll have to pull cams to do it plus you’ll need to buy shims.
Is this motor similar to the bmw f650?
I just had to do shims and check valves for my ktm… this is probably just like it and shouldn’t be too hard. I can come over one of these nights and help ya
Its not hard. I have feeler gauges and a shim kit.
It is fairly easy, I got really good at it when I owned Honda 250f Mx bikes they had a titanium coated steel valve (only on the intake side) and they were due for a check every few races or else you’d end up with a grenaded cylinder piston and head if you didn’t catch them in time.

I have the wheeler together and she spins over and has spark and fuel but not firing. I need to rebuild the carb because it drips out of the over flow port just sitting there. Im starting to think its the aftermarket box. Everyone says they have issues and the stock one solved most of the peoples head aches.
Id still like to check the valves. This weekend is pretty shot but maybe next week after work?
I put the stock clutch in backwards and it works. The new one should be here on the 18th. Ill swap them when its hear but for now it cranks over and fires on both plugs just doesnt run.
Im gonna tare the carb apart and clean up everything tonight. I ordered the BIG GUNZ cdi box to replace the vortex box i have now.

Got the big gunz box and still doesnt start let alone fart. Plenty of spark but the plugs are not getting wet at all. I cleaned up the carb and still nothing so a new carb from ebay for $80 is coming this week. Mine was pretty beat and missing some bolts for the bowl but the needle and seat were fine, jets were clean… the rubber gaskets and diaphragms were a little beat but usable.
