A bipartisan 78 percent of Americans want the U.S. government to impose a 40 mile per gallon fuel-efficiency standard for American vehicles, according to a new Opinion Research Corporation (ORC) national opinion survey. According to the report, nine out of 10 Americans expect gas prices to go up “in the near future,” with nearly half (46 percent) “definitely” expecting a resumption of higher fuel prices.
70 percent of Americans are not turning their back on fuel-efficiency concerns and say that they are factoring “expected future gasoline price increases into consideration in thinking about buying a new vehicle.”
The study found temporarily lower gasoline prices are not sending large numbers of Americans rushing back to gas-guzzling SUV and trucks. In fact, nearly half (45 percent) of Americans are now more likely to buy a “hybrid or other fuel-efficient vehicle” than they were six months ago, compared to 30 percent who are unchanged in their plans and fewer than one in four (24 percent) who are less likely to make such a vehicle purchase.
[reality]100% of Americans want 40+ mpg but aren’t willing to give up things like dragging an extra 2 tons of metal everywhere they go because they have to keep up with their neighbors.[/reality]
I went to the EPA’s fuel economy site (fueleconomy.gov), and downloaded the 2006 and 1990 list of cars, entered them into excel, and sorted by combined EPA rating. In the top 30 cars, 7 were manufactured in 2006. First place was the '06 Prius at 55mpg, 30th was the '90 Civic HF at 35mpg.
Most Americans think "President Bush and Congress could help U.S. automakers be more competitive by increasing the federal fuel-efficiency standard to 40 miles per gallon”. Such a move is supported by 78 percent of Americans, including 45 percent who back it strongly. Support for a 40 mpg fuel-efficiency standard cuts across party lines: Republicans (70 percent); Independents (78 percent); and Democrats (84 percent).
Personally I like filling my tank all the time. It gives me an excuse to stop and grab some food and be a true American. How else would they expect me to put weight on? I guess I could sue them for starvation because I didn’t have a reason to stop.
In before some one thinks I’m serious. But chances are you didn’t see this. Unless you tried quoting it. Now if you’ll excuse me I have a Wal-Mart to sue.
if you want better milage you need a lighter car. end of story. a 4-6K pound car is not going to get 40mpg. you want good milage? geet a smaller car or one without much power its simple really.
i was watching Al Gore’s An Inconvenient truth and there was a part on where america stands with fuel efficient cars and we are the lowest in the world with an average of like 15-20mpg and also showing that the companies like toyota and honda (companies with the most efficient cars) are doing so much better than american manufactures but that part was obvious
you have to burn more fuel to get more power. Proven fact. 40mpg legislation = a whole lot of slow cars unless we want to drive crotch rockets or ariel atoms. I’m liberal on most issues but fuck this one.
