951 winter progress

making progress mike!! subframe looks pimp, of course

Drilling spot welds?

Paint Masters on BHTL Rd. apparently has the good Blair drill bits. Should make your life a lot easier than mine. I have a few more Iā€™d like to knock out on the FD if you get the bit.

Iā€™m not going to get the bit, Iā€™m probably going to drill the 4 welds, and then just take the die grinder to it

Small update for tonight.

Pulling the ONE bolt out of the block I snapped (one of the ones for the water pump). Figures itā€™s always one thatā€™s a PITA. I had tried to double nut it and spray it and heat it earlier in the week. Chris heated it and tried to use vice grips, then he welded the nut to it (it snapped) then he welded bar stock as I twisted it counter clockwise which almost got it. Ended up drilling it out.

We also finished putting the pistons in and coated bearings  I should have the oil pump, pickup, and pan put on this week. The head is being refreshed and then itā€™ll be put back on. Only 22 days to goā€¦

gross. thatā€™s annoying. iā€™ve never taken on a project of this magnitude, but the most annyoing thing in the world to me is when i snap a bolt working on a stupid old german car.

lol at your pistons. they look like asian people!

EDIT: and good progress. iā€™m glad to see this project is coming along nicely. i canā€™t wait to see it when it is done.

Haha yeah, I hate snapping bolts off. Iā€™ve been pretty good about it as of late, but aparently that one was beyond help.

Nasty Edge from cutting in the rear of the car.

Cleaning up said edge.

Much better, smooth to the touch (so I wont slice my hand open on it).

Wheel well finally stripped, doesnt look pretty but Iā€™ll be sanding it and spraying it black soon. Then the suspension goes back in. The car WILL be back down on itā€™s wheels next week. Big progress when that happens

Euro Pistons 10.6:1 vs US Spec 9.5:1

just out of curiosity, does the 9.5:1 ratio have anything to do with the name of the car? as in 9.5:1 = 951? or is that just a coincidence?

Nothing at all. Thatā€™s a chassis code independent of the engine. Anything with the NA 9.5:1 engine would be a 944, not a 951 (a 944 Turbo).

thanks for clearing that up

Wow I gotta hand it to you Mike, you seriously have taken this car to its roots haha. I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever seen so much work go into a car like this. How much interior is being put back in? Just seats?

Floor, seats, dashboard (which Iā€™m modifying), and cage. The car should be racing PCA GT3S in '09.

Like those BSAā€™s nice color choice.
LOL@Piston Smiley

Wondering when youā€™re gonna drop an EllisJuan into your 951?

:snky:

Ohhh huhhh huhhh (french accent)

so the motor is going back in NA?

Different motor, but yes, this year. Iā€™m picking up the basis for the new turbo motor the 23rd.

As usual the weekend was up with Brent ā€œworkingā€ on the RX7, but I brought my front suspension with me to the other house and tore it down and went through it, hoping to have the front wheel wells painted and front suspension on tomorrow. If all goes well, the block will be in and the car will be on the ground this week. (Minus the fuel system and a complete exhaust)

fucking control arms that are worth as much as half of the Civics / Neons on this board

Fabcar arms will do that. Oddly Iā€™ve been eyeing charlie arms for when I get the Kokeln top hats and Moton CS.

Another small update, though Iā€™m not sure why I continually post ā€œSmall updateā€ they all are small picture wise despite the hours upon hours I spend in the garage. heh.

Anywayā€¦

Stripped out wheel well, with the 4 studs remaining to mount the fender liner (which I havent used in years).

http://www.mturck.com/944/Jan07/DSC7684.jpg
So I cut all the studs off and grinded them metal fender well down flush.

A HUGE step forward.

The 968 brake scoops Ive been using in conjunction with the big ducts to the hats. Need to grab some new hardware and put those on tomorrow.

Passangers side, painted but waiting to dry.

Tomorrow Iā€™ll be installing the steering rack, passangers suspension, and front sway. Hoping to also pull the dash and start rewiring and maybe finish stripping undercoating in the rear. Big list, letā€™s see how much I actually get done. http://www.mturck.com/rofl.gif
