To add to that, most of the other events are promoted by national organizations who could care less if Pittsburgh gets a new arena. They will just find another city to have their events. No one but me and my wife bought my home so why shouldn’t the Pens buy theirs?
same reason the steelers and pirates didn’t buy theirs
So now that this debate has angried up the blood, who’s up for pickup hockey - blades or ice next week or the week after?
please, go back and read the finacial differences between the 3 organizations. 2 out of the 3 turn a pretty decent buck.
that is funny on the game tonight they were talking about the move and said the city lost out 150million in revenue without the team last year because of the strike
How much would a new arena cost?
Sign the Petition and help keep the Pens in Pittsburgh!!
you know there is nothing wrong with the area we have now. i hate the name mellon area i mean they could have been more oringal with the name. anyhow i see nothing wrong with it. maybe if they started winning some games it be a different story on a new place. but they are what next to last? i hate to say it but Kansas City Pens has a nice ring too it. just 1 thing guess Luchessies will lose some business in monessen when & if Mario moves them to a new state. since he likes there food there.
what are you talking about? they call it mellon arena because that is who pays for it. it is old and run down. they need a new one with more compactiy. they pack every game so whocares if they don’t win. just fill the seats
do you realize the few arena’s that were proposed only increased the hockey game seating capacity by 1000?
since you can not do any research on the subject and have no clue how to argue your point I will give you more fun facts. The arena had estimations in the following ballpark, 204 - 225 million for constuction. Do you have any clue how much the steelers and pirates stadiums cost? PNC Park cost 260 million dollars and Heinz field cost 281 million dollars.
and here is the killer!!!
The Pirates provided about 18 percent of the $260 million cost of PNC Park, and the Steelers provided about 44 percent of the $281 million cost of the football stadium. That would mean the arena that pulls in the least amount of revenue would be the most expensive stadium in the city!!! unless the pens org bucks up some money, it would be financial suicide for the city to take this plunge.
mellon arena is sitting on awesome property that could probably be developed to help business in the city. I think that would be their best bet.
i just don’t like the name for the arena thats all. i could care less who pays for it but they could have thought up an oringal name. i will contune to go if they lose but i’d just like to see them win at lease 1 game when iam there. they always seem to lose when iam there cause they always put Thibault in goal.
No, listen, MELLON, the corporation, paid MILLIONS of dollars to the city/Penguins to have the naming rights. Since they are Mellon, and want to promote their business, they named it the MELLON arena. Pretty simple.
dont u think a new arena would open up alot more oportunity for events to come here? its already been stated that mellon doesnt have upated enough structure to support alot of the new stages …so right there that would mean more concerts. ya, bonjovi came and sold out, big deal. there could be more with a new/bigger arena. also, even in the nhl. there are cameras that they have this year that hang down for some crazy goal view. when the games are in pittsburgh we cant use them becuase mellon doesnt have updated enough structure to do it. its embarrassing how old, beat and outdated that place is.
also, whitey if u r gonna compare 8 reg steeler home games (which are all of the regular season home games) then compare it to all of the Pens home games which is 41 not 30
reading comp owns you…
thats why i used the value of 30
and your statement is completely based on a big “what if”
i saw that. im just saying they play 41 at home, so who cares if it takes 30 to equal the 8 home steeler games. also, when u r talkin about money combined each venue would bring in, if u count all the penguin games and events combined that are in mellon and eventually the new arena, im sure it would equal or exceed hienz’s money year-round…since they dont do much else besides fotball. also, there is no point comparing the 2 anyways. steelers and pirates got a new stadium each that doesnt do much else but sit when they arent playing and there r ppl opposed to a much more versitile arena that keep our hockey team and can be used for much more. i dont oppose the steelers and pirates getting a new place, but if they get one, so should the Pens.
and as far as the ‘what if’ thats somewhat speculation as far as what new things it would bring in, but at the same time its fact that the arena is old , beat and outdated. so eventually there is gonna be no choce but to get one…whether its 5 years down the line or whatever. so why not do it now while we can still save the hockey team? and also anyone that was watchin last nights game on OLN, they talked about how much money the city lost due to the lock-out and no Penguin games.
Math is fun when you research and use more realistic numbers. Average Steeler ticket price is around $59 from a number of different sources I found roaming the web, if you have a good source for your number of double that please provide (here’s mine http://www.teammarketing.com/fci.cfm?page=fci_nfl_05.cfm) Also, as most sources point out, the the average steeler ticket price rose sharply with the move to Heinz field.
The Pens this year are on average to hit 640,000 attendance at an average ticket price of $36
Last year the Steeler’s attendance was just over 500,000, so at $59 a ticket tha would have been ticket sales of around $29.5 million
the Pens at 640,000 fans at $36 a seat would bring in a tad over 23 million. (the pens currently have a below NHL average, average ticket price)
So basically tax income to the city based solely on taxes from ticket revenue would not be a huge difference.
Also where did you get your funding statistics for PNC and Heinz field? I did some looking but did not find any quotes figures that looked quite that good.
I’m not necessarily trying to argue any team is more deserving of anything, just seems that overall the numbers from potential income from Hockey or Football to the city is similar except that hockey events occur much more often which would be of much greater benefit to other businesses.
nice…
so steelers income more than 6 million playing almost 30 less games? how economically sound is that?
so yeah, businesses have a CHANCE to make profit becuase there are more hockey games… but they also pay MORE to employees three times a week than the steelers do once a week. so a busniess is opened 3 times that week to a business only open one time a week for slightly more fans (which i’m doubting your sources) yet less total income.??? i’m missing the part about it being economically sound. a business is to open more often for slightly more people for a venue that makes less total. :kekegay:
something isn’t adding up.
:ugh2:
average ticket price was a number I had from when I worked for Heinz Field. I feel like your number is excluding the luxury suites, if I get a free moment today I will give my old boss a call and get the exact number for this season.
and here is my source for the funding stats on PNC and Heinz

doesnt matter, the point is the income to the city between the 2 teams is comparable. noone is putting one against the other, thats not the point. im saying it doesnt make sense that the steelers and pirates get their own stadiums that are primarily a ‘specialty’ stadium made almost for nothing more than those teams and we are having a hard time getting an arena thats 1)needed anyways, 2) saves our hockey team, 3) more versitile than the other 2 stadiums and should bring in even more events and things like that. especially if they get slots and other things for ppl to do like alot of the new hockey stadiums are getting.
