Alan's-240

Alright let’s review:

  1. You just joined the club and just got your first car
  2. You are 17 and don’t even have your full license yet
  3. This is acutally the second thread that has been locked on you IIRC …
  4. You are talking in a public place that you are 1) worried about the mechanical condition of your car, 2) are about to do top speed runs.

So let me say something to you. Everyone is happy when someone picks up a 240 and joins the club. Espically someone with passion and who is going to make good use of the car (and not just a hardparker like myself)

However, top speed runs are gay. First of all, our cars are not that fast.
Second of all driving to the max speed in a straight line isn’t driving skill. I get passed on the 401 when I’m driving FAST by people in shitboxes talking on their cell phones. It’s not a challange.
Third … best case your needle pegs anticlimaticly at 180 …woohoo. Worse case something bad happens. You personally could lose your car, license, life whatever. Now the police go ‘hmmm 240s are the cars to look out for’ and the rest of us pay for your mistakes. Not to mention our club looks like a bunch of retarted kids who DESERVE to pay an arm and leg for insurance for not giving you the advice I’m giving you now.

OK … most talented? See my comments about driving in a straight line.
Biggest risktakers? If by risktakers you mean group of people who do stupid things on public roads and endanger others for no reason … we don’t want that image because insurance and the public don’t like it. If by risktaking you mean braking as late as possible so you go quickly through the turn … see my comments above about driving in a straight line.

I know it sounds safe. But your attitude indicates that overall something bad is going to happen to you soon enough.

Well I’ll save you the trouble. It will go about 180km/h in a straight line. It is sort of like driving 40-50km/h faster then most people do on the highway. When you hit about 180 your needle will peg past 180 and it will look like you are going faster then you acutally are. Then your engine will suddenly stop making power as the ECU activates the fuel cut.

Sorry I guess I have to be the safety jerk now that David Wheeler has washed his hands of us.
Come out to the drift practice event. For $60 you can see what your 240 will REALLY do

Well Said!!!

Word. If you somehow took ALL the risk out of checking your car’s top speed it’s still a waste of fuel. I don’t drive faster than 120 b/c 240s get shit gas mileage.

& dont forget the danger in going that fast on the highway in RWD…

Or maybe its just me that gets scared everytime the rear end skips like a stone on water when it goes over a pothole or support beam in a bridge.

… must … resist … urge to … rip alan … new hole…

ive never had my rear end skip, on any of my RWD cars (81 camaro z-28, 84 fiero, and 92 240sx)

so i dont know what you are talking about

You need to learn how to read people’s posts Alan.

And if you are going to correct someone, might be a good idea to be right.

If you dont know what a word means, check google or a dictionary, don’t just assume.

… sorry, i try to stay out of these things, but greg locked the thread where i would have posted this.

Meh, drive however you like, you live and you learn.

Let me rephrase…
The first time I met Sven was about 3 years ago at a 240 meet. First thing he starts talking about is, “guys, my car just understeers, i keep trying to drift but the back-end just doens’t want to come out”

I have a feeling that you’ve been trying to drift on a street sven, no?

He’s 17 years old, I understand you are trying to give him advice, but don’t forget how you were when you were his age. I’m sure he will not listen, just like you wouldn’t either.

My advice is, avoid industrial parks because they often have police rolling through them, so if you checked the area and there is no one there, don’t stick around drifting for too long.

As for wangan, just don’t go beyond 180 with improper tires (lower speed rating), because if a tire blows at that speed, well, I think the clean-up crew will have to do a lot of scrubbing.

Thng is, if he “drives how he likes” , he’s going to end up killing someone or at very least adding to the Ins. companies already dismal view of the 240… enough of that already. Bah I don’t get kids these days… driving like mooks.

Then again, how do you know? Do you work for a large insurance company that is weary of insuring 240 drivers?

Rotor, i took you for that ride, clearly I was doing “illegal” stuff. Everyone drives like a “mook” once in a while, but some people drive like “mooks” more than others. You can’t do anything about it.

Everyone will drive stupid at least once.

The difference between retards and the… well, less-retarded, is that the former will do it in a crowded timmies parking lot while the latter will try to be safe about it – in order to MINIMZE (can’t ever eliminate) the risks. They will do this by doing it uber-late at night, in PROPERLY SETUP CARS, in deserted areas, at a time when they feel it is safe to do so. In other words, there is a THOUGHT PROCESS involved rather than just doing it on the spot to impress people.

Of course, shit happens even to the best of us. All you can do is try to be careful and keep thinking how to minimze the risks – to the benefit of yourself and others.

Yea, so long as there was a conscious effort to ensure that all safety checks are met, I dont see many issues with driving like a fucktard, hell we all are guilty of it at some point or another, just as pavel said, so those who look down at others becusae they are being slightly wreckless while still in control shouldnt be so condecending, becasue we were all there, and this isnt to defend how i drive, cause i really dont fuck off too much on the roads (unless its rainy ;)) just be careful, but i live in ottawa, and there arent too many stupid 240 drivers so im pretty safe, too bad for u GTA ppl :P:P

without the retards the normal guys would just look worse.

i mean think about the times you are sitting at tim’s getting eyeballed by the pigs, and just when u think they are going to make a move on you a civic rips by showing off his vtec and the attention is diverted.

and dude, 240’s dont go faster than 180. why would u do a top speed run?

my moms windstar goes faster than my 240 in top speed. yay.

do a stopping distance run, yo.

ive never had my rear end skip, on any of my RWD cars (81 camaro z-28, 84 fiero, and 92 240sx)

so i dont know what you are talking about

must be the fact that kevin has shit suspension or the fact that his tires are always bald. (Crazy uncertified bastard)

As for wangan, just don’t go beyond 180 with improper tires (lower speed rating), because if a tire blows at that speed, well, I think the clean-up crew will have to do a lot of scrubbing.

Pavel, I might be unexperienced/stupid. But that’s the one thing I have experienced in a 240 & I got off very lucky. Very lucky. In day time.

Now I’m just not into the whole ripping down the highway for obvious reasons.

my moms windstar goes faster than my 240 in top speed. yay.

dont forget the guy in the ford escort going 220 drinking his coffee…

Holy nail on the head, Batman! :werd:

dont be like me

Then again, how do you know? Do you work for a large insurance company that is weary of insuring 240 drivers?

becuse that’s how the ins system works in north america… and since the 240 IS the civic in terms of 2nd hand buyers being young kids and fixing them up… and the fact that it’s predominantly a car used for… less then safe driving… well go price out ins for a 240 that and say a NEW 350… they will be damn close to the same number…

regardless… yeah you took me for a ride… right past the chief of ploice for south simcoe, a local judges house and two lawyers homes… and your also in a bit of trouble now for doing the same thing in another place… so no it does NOT pay to be a clown… at any time of the day… that’s why my ins over the years has dropped… even in this day and age… to under $600 for a year. Pick your time and place very carfully and take it to a solo event whenever you can… gets that hunger for speed out of your system…

On another note… this kids car is obviously not up to full snuff… who knows what could be going on int he suspension or brakes… safties just chek if they work not function under extremes… doing 180 is not only risking his own life… which really means nothing… but it’s potential to kil/harm others is very high… even if he wrecks himself , who’s to say the next car along the why doesn’t see an errant part in the middle of the road , cut down a tyre at speed and ends up vaulting in a barrel roll because if it.

I’ll beuild the cars and make them beef to stand up to just about any abuse… but I really do not condone stupidity like this kid has. and what parent lets thier 17 year old have a rwd sporty-ish car?? not smart.

the rep wasn’t worth the reprocusion

Acutally I was talking to David Wheeler and asking about grip turns … I couldn’t figure out why I was always understeering in low speed turns. Turns out I was just a terrible newb driver. And I was never practicing on the street, it was always in a huge parking lot.

The only time I’ve ‘drifted’ on the street is when I turned from plowed upper middle to unplowed 3rd line and I bent my control arms front and rear. Definetly not intended.

Well I think I did listen. Everyone basically hinted that I was a bad driver. So I stopped driving quickly and counted the days until I afford to start going to the track. Since then I’ve been accident and ticket free. And I remember exactly what I was like at that age. Trying to tell this guy what people told me. At least he sees both sides of the argument now instead of people telling him to go for it and just remember to check his tire pressure first …

Now that I’m with Formula SAE at Western I understand what driving fast really is. We have a car that we built by hand that can pull 1.5gs and do 0-100 in 3.5. I’ve only had the chance to drive it once so far … but it was incredible and I can’t wait until I’m no longer a starving student. Hopefully my engineering education will pay for a lot of track time in a nice track car.

Congrats sven, I still have never seen you drive at the track, chances are I will never get to see it because you never come out.

Formula SAE is completely irrelevent to the topic and it’s a miserable attempt to give yoursel credibility because building a car does not make you any better of a driver.

So what you’re saying is that you still suck at driving because you don’t know how to control a car during a slide and you bent some of the suspension pieces in a situation that could have been avoided.

Stop ripping on the poor kid.

And average player, stop putting yourself down, everyone has to learn some time.
