hey im anticipating purchasing a new alarm and it seems like clifford has some good stuff to offer =) i thought that this might be a good place for people to discuss the effectiveness of alarms and what people should look out for when buying and installing etc. im sure we could all use the advice.
im thinking about purchasing a clifford any suggustions on which one is the best? thanks.
also what are some other effective tools in preventing people from stealing your car :?:
maybe another good way is to take out a few fuses so that they will suspect the car is fucked up so badly they wont even bother after they crank it over a few times… very cool idea my friend told me
This really depends on what you are trying to protect… Are you really worried about somebody trying to take the car? or rather the stuff inside? It is fairly easy to protect the car itself… tougher to protect the contents and near impossible to protect against vandalism.
If you really want to protect your car… make sure that you get your alarm installed correctly by someone you trust. Any alarm will work but more options cost more. If you want strictly security and no convienience options alarms can be found anywhere (Walmat, Crappy Tire… etc). I would personally advise away from them because the quality of the systems is somewhat questionable.
It is tough to say what setup will be the best for each individual without knowing what exactly you want. Directed Electronics (who make Clifford, Python, Viper and many others) have some very good products. Compustar has good stuff too… mostly your decision will come down to what convienience options and nifty toys you want.
What do you want the alarm to do? Simple shock sensor and door pins? Starter kill? Glass break? Proximity/radar? There are infinite options… I recommend talking to a reputable shop about this and not trying to do it yourself.
One thing really sparked my mind that was mentioned on this board not too long ago. If you’re worried about break-ins, smashed windows, etc… don’t leave anything valuable inside the car and just leave the lock open. Alongside this, I’d install a kill switch in a discreet location.
Might sound stupid at first, but if you’re car has been broken into at least once or twice before, I’d seriously consider doing this. 90% of the time it’s just some punk kids wanting that change and what not that break your window.
The only thing I am worried about is having my entire car stolen.
I have a removable face-plate on my head unit that I always take out
wherever I go.
For those that are somewhat knowledgable of electricals, consider a
fuel-pump and/or ignition cut-off.
Here are some diagrams to get you started.
On the ignition harness, I believe the WHITE wire (#1 on the IGNITION
SWITCH chart) is the one you want to splice a switch into. Best to keep
the wire away from the harness and relay box just to not draw attention.
