this used to be a racing forum, its not anymore so everyone will just tell you not to speed.
on the point of the police having to keep their lights on it beggs the question. What is their goal? If the shoot radar with their lights on they slow the majority of traffic and in theory make the highway a safer place to drive, shooting radar with ligts off just issues tickets and only slows a handfull of people.
slow the majority > punish the unlucky

iirc, The troopers that were shooting radar on the thruway had to keep their running lights on until the patriot act. After that, they didn’t have to keep them on.
I think they are happy if you slow down just for that couple miles or whatever. I was going down some Buffalo road doing about 45 in a 35. A cop was on a side street about to turn the opposite way I was heading. He saw me go by and followed me up about a block to the next red light. He pulled on the side of me and yelled at me for not slowing down when I saw him. Buffalo cops also think your doing 30mph faster than you actually are. A Buffalo cop pulled me over and said I was doing 75mph around a turn that you can’t do more than 30. Majority of them don’t have radar so they were just guessing.
Police stopped using X Band because it is effective in shorter distances. They also have a hard time getting an accurate reading around heavily populated business areas because of interference. KA isn’t harder to pick up. It is normally used by troopers because of the effective length a reading can be obtained from. If you don’t get a read out on your detector until you see the trooper on the other side of the road… it’s because he is on the other side of the highway and the trees, distance, and other traffic are dampening the signal.

Thats prob the reason they are using it, everytime i pull into some plaza my detector usually goes nuts with the X band so i just dismiss it. Naturally ive become prone to ignore it saying “X band” so if it went off on some random road id prob just ignore it and keep on goin. I think its pretty snky on their behalf and actually kinda smart. I dont normally speed but now i might pay a little more attention to it if i get the X on my screen.
Ka band is not hard to detect at all, my V1 picks that up and they can be pretty far up the road too
the probelm these cops have is they leave it ALWAYS ON and not just instant on thats why they never get as many speeders as they’d like
City Of Tonawanda for example is the best one to use because they ALWAYS! drive with their radars constantly on Ka so its easy to tell where and when they are coming from
so them hiding is no secret they might as well stick out a white flag and say hi im here go slow

Yeah but 99% of people don’t have a radar detector, much less a high-end one.
Motortrend did a Police Cruiser review a little while back with the charger, impala and vic. After talking to a few professionals they said that they preferred to not have the V8 cars because it was more of a liability risk for the police stations. They don’t want cops chasing people around at 100mph+, thats what they have radios for.
Thats just what they said. I have no opinion in this.

I agree if someone is going above 100mph and they keep their car out of a tree that is fine by me :). otherwise darwin will set them straight.
what about cell phone tickets? i see cops everywhere on cruising around talking on there cell but they can pull you over for doing the same thing thats bs

i believe that the law allows law enforcement and emergency services to use cell phones while driving without a hands free… might be wrong though

Yeah I saw an A-District guy on his phone next to me on S.Park and Tifft at the light. He was chuckling on his phone then looks over at me and im going that thing with my fingers like you are peeling carrots. He gave me a dirty look and said “Thats how I roll”
