Ok, my winter beater’s registration is due Dec 20th. NYS won’t allow me to re-register it because it doesn’t have a valid inspection on it. I even tried online, and got the error code, lol. Oh well. The car runs great, but the check engine light is on, the exhaust is loud, the one window doesn’t roll down (yes they have to roll up and down on their own to pass). I would sooner buy another beater that is inspected than dump a grand into this car. It’s a '98 Grand Prix GT with 133K on it.
My question is this…Can I turn in the plates say tomorrow, then go and re-register with a different new set of plates and get a temporary sticker and a new 2 year registration? The way I see it, is that if I were to sell the car right now to someone else, they could LEGALLY register it for 2 years and get a temporary sticker irregardless if it has one on it right now.
Even if you reregister it you still will have to pass inspection.Try clearing the codes and if you have a code reader watch the readiness moniters and get them to reset, you can have 2 not reset.
the only thing that will fail you is the codes, i have never seen a place check windows and as long as theres mufflers it should be good, unhook the batt for a few mins go drive it for a bit and go to autozone and have it scanned for codes for free and go from there
whats the ses codes? I don’t see how people think its alot of work, hard or whatever. To get a STOCK 1998 GM to pass. I think you should just Pm me on this lol
Alot of times the moniters will reset before the codes come back.So it will pass.Thats why i said to clear them and see if they reset without the codes comming back right away.As for the window, one of the first things i do when i pull a car into the shop is roll down the window.I am sure most people do the same,so stupid things dont happen like locking the keys in the car.
Codes will fail, muffler does not mean a damned thing, a muffler is not required for the NYS inspection. Windows, eh, which one isn’t working properly? See what code it has first. window motors are easy, as are check engine lights.
it all depends on the code. i’ve never read anywhere in the NYS inspection guidelines that windows are part of it, unless they’ve amended that since august of 2008(i haven’t done any inspections since then). get the code first, then more people can assist you. if it’s an evap code, unhook battery to clear codes, run car for about 50-100 miles and don’t let the tank drop below the 3/4 mark. the evap won’t even run a test and the code won’t pop up for the inspection. o2 sensors and EGR problems can be bypassed w/ some jumpers and resistors. PM me for more info on these.
window is not part of inspection unless the glass is broke,., neither is the muffler
Technically you are correct about the reg. I have discussed this with a member here and i think it might work and be a loop hole. I will call a contact at erie county auto bureau today and ask.(none of the local reg office’s are state ones here)
I’d be happy to scan your car for you and see whats going on(esp since we work so far from each other LOL)
Windows must work. You are suppost check for chip in the edge of the windows, only comerical trucks the windows dont have to work.It also must have a muffler.
From Erie Couty Auto Bureau- If you register a vehicle(new reg/or re-reg) that was previously registered to you you are not eligible for a 10-day.
Cliff’s-
If your winter beater was denied reregistration due to no inspection history in the past 15 months. You cannot receive a 10 day temp reg from DMV. You can get a temp registration from DMV’s division of Clean Air in albany. You then have the vehicle towed to an inspection station (cant drive an uninspected vehicle). Where if it fails (for monitors only) it will be issued a 10 day extension inspection. With this temp reg. and temp inspection you can drive the car for testing/fixing purposes(to set monitors). Once it passes an inspection you can apply for registration.
It was previously thought if you turned your plates in and then applied for a new registration, you would be eligible for a 10 day. This is not the case if you are the prior owner of the vehicle.

The window must move up and down.I know of a place that didnt check it and got a fine for it not working. Also i had to do an inpection on a comerical truck and the window didnt work,so my manager called and they told him it only applys to non commercial.
im saying get it scanned to see what they are, but if you reset it and reset the monitors the code might not come back or at least not right away thus allowing it to pass, i had to do this with my truck it can work
well why not diagnose the car and figure out what the problem is. You probably need a dpfe sensor in your truck and by resetting the code you can reset the parameters. That will reset the computers test such leads to misdiagnosis.
Mike it’s not in there. There may be a DOT regulation in regards to it, but not inspection.
from CR 79.21(inspection regs)

thats it for glass/windows. What if a Jeep came in with no doors? does it fail for no side windows- No
yeah ive never had my windows checked either, at any legit places. Sounds like your inspection place just wants to try to sell you a window motor and labor.
The reason it probally passed steve is it had not yet run the monitor where the problem was. 96-2000 can have 2 unset monitors. 2000 and up only one. Chances are when it was inspected the pcm had not run that monitor, once it did the light would re-set.
