Another Stub Axle + Rear Wheel Bearing

Sheered off another stub axle, it is the EXACT same break as the last one, leading me to believe that improper torque on the center lug combined with old wheel bearings is causing this. (Along with an aggressive bit of driving). New Bearings + calibrated 3/4 drive torque wrench will hopefully solve my problems (and make me start blowing CV’s instead!)

Shows bearing play with the caliper off (overlayed images)

Oddly enough the bearing wasnt making any of the typical noises, it just went out, catastropically, it’s warped and absolutely toast. The double bearing sealed aluminum ones that are supposed to be in there fell apart when I finally got it apart. Sadly they need Porsche Special Tool (bull shit part number here) to be fixed, so I have to go borrow that from a friend.

damn man

did you ever get the other one fixed?

how hard was it?

An absolute pain in the ass, here’s a rundown of what has to be done.

Jack car, pull wheels, 12 cheeseheads (12 point, double torx, etc), per axle, drop coilover off trailing arm, pull trailing arm down, get axle out, pull caliper, remove 36mm center lug on stub axle (which when shattered means pull the half of broken stub axle out), pray the bearing is warped and twisted which makes it necessary to get out a sledge to hammer it off (8 full swings to remove it), porsche special tool to remove bearing, after you’ve heated the trailing arm with a torch so the bearing will come out… Then you’re half way.
