anyone run into problems installing xp/win2k (computer gurus)

i got all my computer stuff today so i went to work setting it up, i’m having problems loading anything other than win98. it basically gets to the setup screen after copying the files for windows setup and just hangs up when it says it’s starting windows. i snooped around a lil on the net and came across some similar problems but none of the solutions have worked,

this is where i think the problem is:

“If Windows NT sees two storage controllers (e.g. a RAID
controller in addition to the normal IDE controller), it will try to add HAL versions for both controllers, get confused and lock at the “Setup is starting Windows 2000”
part of the DOS-like file copying. To work around this, press F5 at the very beginning of Setup (before the F6
request for SCSI controller drivers); F5 presents a list of
computer platform choices, reflecting single vs multi-processors and proprietary offerings (e.g. MIPS, Compaq vs standard PC). These appear to call differing kernel compiles; so, these choices are very significant.”

but none of those other settings worked.

i also disabled everyting i could in the bios as i was told by one person it could be a conflict, everything onboard was disabled, i reseated the ram, reseated the processor, it’s not overheating, tried another HD (standard ide instead of sata) unplugged cdrom, tried winxp pro, home, and 2 copies of win2k i have.

i can load 98 but i get this:

“Your multifunction device (standard dual PCI IDE Controller) has some child devices using 32bit drivers and others using compatability mode drivers. This configuration is not supported so your computer halted to prevent corruption.
After you restart your computer, windows will use compatibility mode drivers for each child device attached to this multifunction device. If you want to use 32bit drivers, you may be able to obtain an updated driver for the device that caused the problem by contacting your hardware manufacturer or you can disable the device.
Press any key to continue.”

and the cdrom will not load so i can’t update drivers for the host controllers or try upgrading to another os

that’s where i’m at, exhausted all my connections no one seems to have anything other than what i tried already

hold on there’s something missing in my raid config i’m gonna attempot that now i’ll update if it don’t work

you have to install the raid controller before hand or the win installer doesn’t know what it has to work with. Didn’t the m/b include a driver CD?

yeah it had 2 options the first one wasn’t right…on to the 2nd one now hopefully this will work if it doesn’t i’m out of ideas

ok, i installed the controller and it’s still locking up - what am i missing, i have the drive set in a raid0 config, i can see the drive in dos no problem, i loaded the drivers and basically followed the book on everything, it loaded them now says starting windows and it’s just sitting there again

ok, i’m thinking it’s not a raid problem as i should be able to disable raid on the sata drive and have it just load windows normally wihtout the raid controllers…but i can’t, locks up

<didn’t read any of the thread>

press f6 for third party raid controller drivers and load them, right when it turns blue booting from the os cd

if you would have read it you would have saw that i’ve been doing that…actually for the last 3 hours i load the drivers they gave me for it it says “starting windows” and it sits there…that’s it - sat for an hour didnt’ do anything

although i think some of the 97+'s had “snatch vents” below the steering wheel that’s about it

if i load xp though upgrade instead of full installation it goes to a blank black screen and the floppy drive light stays on…but the comp is frozen

i am assuming its a mb with and onboard raid setup, you have 1 drive… you do not to need to run raid. go into the bios and disable the raid. go from there. What motherboard did you get again? and what proc?

i did disable the raid and went from there it still locked up at the same point, antoher thing i’m noticing is that sometimes it wont’ turn on, if i reset the bios with a jumper then it turns on (the cdrom spins up but that’s it when it turn it on)

it’s a gigabyte GA-k8nsc-939 athalon 64 3200+

the only reason i put it in a raid setup is because it wasn’t working in a non-raid configuration…well apparently it wn’t work in either

hmm… i am not up on those boards or procs since i stick with intel.

do you have a speaker hooked up to the board? if yes, do you hear any audible alerts? is the board properly grounded?

seems like something is goofy with the hardware

aside from it not turning on once in a while the problem with goofy hardware is that i’ve been on win98 for 2 hours no messin around and it’s been stable and fast…but it won’t load any other OS

no audible alerts or alerts of any kind…just freezes

dunno… never was good at computers

i’m gonna call them on monday i guess and see if they know whats up (manufacturer) maybe there’s an updated driver or something i’m missing…or maybe it needs to go back

yeah i would try flashing the bios, i searched and ask a few people if their were any conflicts with the hardware you bought. they heard of none.

I would be curious to see if you could load XP 64-bit

it seems to me to be a hardware issue, i know you are running 98 fine but understand that the different OS use the hardware differently

yeah i know it’s different all together but someone suggested my hard drive was bad and i don’t think that’s the case or i would see problems with 98.

i disabled everyting i could in the bios all the ports, the usb, stuff like that and it still didnt’ make a difference. i also flashed the bios to the newest version off the website, tryied the newest raid drivers also.

i’ve tried xp home, xp pro, and 2 versions i had of 2k (don’t know what the difference is one asks for a key one doesn’t) and they all lock up at the same time.

the stuff i bought was part of one of those “package” deals where u use the drop down boxes.

i even figured maybe it was my agp card so i pulled it and put a plane-jane vid card in and it still didn’t work.

one thing i noticed is if i do ANYTHING to the board (add a card, pull the floppy cable, move the ide cable, remove a card) anything like that the computer won’t turn on again i have to reset the bios 2 or 3 times. first i thought maybe i just had to turn it off 2 or 3 times but i spent a half hour turning it off, on, reset button, nothing worked until i put the jumper on the board and rset the bios - i’m certain that’s not normal

BIOS flash  :

http://www.giga-byte.com/Motherboard/Support/BIOS/BIOS_GA-K8NSC-939.htm

you have to create the sata raid config floppy after you set the bios and before you install windows

yeah page one somewhere i said i did that…for 3 hours trying the other drivers for other chipsets thinking MAYBE something was goofed

and your link takes you to the newest flash…which i also alredy did
