Block Cleaning

So boys im ripping down a kade for a complete build. I’m almost down to a bare block and im wondering how you guys have went about cleaning it. I have searched all over and keep finding all these different answer’s. I want this block to look braaaand new! Thanks in advance!

If its a bare block, your probably going to send it to a machine shop to get it planed at the very least no? Just get them to hot tank it while its there and it’ll be good as new.

:stupid:

Yes you should have it decked if it’s all apart. Then have it hot tanked. Just the Tremels ordered.

If your going to go as far as to take the block in to a machine shop…I would also send the crank and main caps along, as well as the head. If your dead serious about doing this right, have the block hot tanked, fluxed (to check for cracks) Decked and line honed. Line honing is a process overlooked by many novice engine builders. It involves torqueing down the main caps, and honing the crank journals (sans bearing) to ensure a flush mating surface for the new main bearings so they dont distort once the caps have been torqued. If you plan on using your stock crank, it would be wise to have it’s surface/tolerences checked as well. If there is any bluing or scuffs on the journals, it must be ground and polished…thusly if that’s the case, you will need to order oversized main/rod bearings, depending on the surfaces affected. As for the head… hot tank, flux and pressure test. Then, at least you know you are starting with a SOLID foundation for your build.

Thanks guys. I’m definetly looking to do this right the first time. Just need to find a machine shop in the area to get it all done at!

If theres an Ideal Supply around your area,…they might have a machine shop attached to them. Thats where I send My stuff in Barrie

Found a shop that is willing to do most of this work for me. Only thing I was unsure of was how much to have taken off. He said he deals mostly with V8’s so would have no idea how much to take off. Any ideas?

If you have a FSM then it should have the tolerances for the head in it.

Mind you it’s a good idea to have the machinist measure the deck height before any maching takes place. Just incase it’s been machined before.

What shop is this? I need machine work on my V8, lol.

Its in St Catharines. Same city as Bings meet. If you dont mind the drive throw me a PM and I will hook you up with the phone number.
