blown coilovers - how to tell?

is there any way to tell if coils are blown when theyre off the car?

any tell tale signs?

thanks guys

dissasemble them, until you just have the strut portion alone.

the “arm” (for lack of a better term) should take quite a bit of force to press it into the strut (say your body weight), and it should return to the fully extended position slowly and evenly…

The “arm” should not fall right into the strut, it also shouldn’t be jammed in the fully extended position

tell tale signs would include covered in grease that has escaped the strut…

----this is how I checked mine, by no means the perfect method, so I will return to this thread to see the suggestions of others.

man Matty
do you have any luck with these cars lol

not mine this time lol

my car is running perfectly fine

i only have coils up front so im checkiing out a rear set and was wondering if there’s any way to tell

wheel hop.

yeah i can tell when there on the car, but i need to know a way to check while there sitting outside of the car

although not having too much technical work with coilovers, i would assume that there is a way to tell. I would do it much like a strut check. Push the coilover down, it will come up because of the spring, but try to listen to make sure there is still oil etc in the coilover its self. If u cant hear any liquid i would then assume its blown.

what Darian is talking about is disassembling the coilover down to the damper, the “arm” he is talking about is the piston.

compress it and it should rebound… if it doesnt… she blownz

i am sure that is not very scientific, but that is how i check when i have like 25 dampers sitting around and need to figure out which ones i want to put back into my car.

yay for the wonderful world of D2’s.

they sold to someone else

thanks guys

shock dyno is the best way

go to multimatic

hey sasha

any chance i can come up to the shop this thursday and pick up my fluid set/

sorry for taking so long

thanks

i wanna say this to alot of people on here alot of times… but i’ll say it to you since you owe me money right now.

people need to consider their audience here…there is no point in making ideal suggestions like this since matty doesnt have access to a shock dyno.

he obviously just wants a quick and dirty way of testing a damper.

matty, instead of trying to figure out of the dampers are blown or not, just go buya porsche 911, brand new off the lot.
