Brand New Battery Draining Overnight.

Hi guys. i am facing a issue, so i am looking for some proffessional help.last week i changed my battery to a brand new one becuz i thought old battery is not strong enough anymore.Got a brand new battery, but still facing da same problem.Battery is draining overnight every day or if car sits for couple of hours.how can i find where some wire is shorting out ? help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

cheers

I’d look into the alternator/charging system first…and if it seems to be starting that is the only issue (do your dash lights still come on when you turn the key?) then it might be the starter on it’s way out due to the cold weather strain.

If you know the battery is dying for sure and suspect wiring, you may want to check your driver’s side fenderwell for any fender liner rips/wiring issues there (typically just if you’re lowered). Also think back to any recent electrical work or anything etc…

Good luck.

i got the same issue… brand new OPTIMA battery. drains overnight. starts fine with a boost and the alt charges over a long time(checked with a volt meter charging at 13.6 volts. i thought it was 14.2 for normal charge…) the dash lights and head lights… everything works(except the cdplayer) when the key is on. and everything goes dim when i try to start it.
i dont think its my starter cause when i crank it with a small boosterpack it fires everytime.

p.s. no fuses have blown… checked em all twice with a tester

get an ammeter and test the draw in the fusible links to see if any of them are sucking power while the car is off, you could still have a short in the main wires where the hot tees off to everything, but you can probably help isolate it like that

if your alternator’s diodes are gone then you will have over-voltage so that’s not it BUT the armiture could still be leaking current, if your cables are all corroded to hell (black or green copper is bad) you can cut them back and install/solder new connectors (battery cables too)

well you altinators are fine. and the NORM charge can be anything from 13+v.
G-E makes some good suggestions with the meter. you are going to have to do a lot of testing. also if you have an aftermarket deck/ alarm/ starter or any non OEM eletronics also check there first. odds are it is one of those.
