I’m sorry guys but most of you just are being reactionary. Statistically, 1 tragic police death over however many years of zero police deaths doesn’t mean there is a problem with the road, speed limit or even what the officer was wearing. The problem was one inattentive driver and no amount of law changing, clothing changing, etc. is going to change that.

then take out the word “probably” and i stand by that statement.

and this. edit: well, except for the zero deaths part. this happens more often than you think, it just hasn’t happened around here much. the bottom line is, if someone isn’t paying attention to the point where they miss the patrol vehicle, they won’t see a yellow vest. i certainly see the point of having one if they are out directing traffic when they aren’t near the vehicle, but in this case i just don’t see it making a difference.

Probably true.

The part that bothers me is the cop has discretion when it comes to speeding. 72 on the 290 at 5:15pm on a weekday, fine, write them a ticket because chances are that’s unsafe driving with all the traffic (and probably part of the reason why it remains 55). 72 in a 55 at dawn on a weekend on a perfectly clear day? It’s a money grab and not a safety issue.

I see your point. 72 in a 55 is still breaking the posted speed limit and the violator should receive a ticket. The general rule of thumb is 10 over and they leave you alone. It’s pay to play.

I don’t speed period, getting there one to 3 minutes faster isnt worth paying for points for 3 years when it dosent get reduced.

I heard on the radio the guy who was driving has not been charged. They are also asking for anyone who has information to come forward. I would think if the guy hit a cop and killed him, it would be a charge right away but could possibly the officer have not pulled over the vehicle properly or something? Someone said it was in an awkward spot that the cop was stopped so its stupid to think that they are going to change anything other than more heavily enforce the move over or slow down law that has been out for a while and just recently enforced.

What I read somewhere this weekend was the move over law probably won’t come into play because the cop basically had the speeder pulled over at the end of an on ramp. Not like you can both slow down and move over 2 lanes when you’re just merging.

Regardless though, expect to see a ton of “failure to move over” tickets this summer. I always get over at least one lane but rarely slow down.

+1

He was almost 20mph over the speed limit.

i set my cruise at the speed limit, always have. I use my cruise entirely too much.

It was a 71 year old man who turned around after the accident. I’m sure what happened was enough for him. It was just after the entrance/on ramp. I’m sure he didnt have enough time to cut accross 2 lanes without causing an accident.

Believe me I agree about the inattentive driver but NY loves to make new rules and regulations so I figured that may be part of the solution, a new rule/regulation.lol The solution is not as simple as blaze orange vests by any means.

The state troopers were hitting up the thruway HARD today. There were people pulled over after every turn around on the 290 at 4pm today

Lots of state troopers out yesterday and today around the 400/transit road area.
