Calling all computer nerds...

yes, you must match the processor and motherboard…you should probably know that if you’re building a computer lol

dont judge me by my rookie status. gotta start somewhere!

Lil this thread is getting funny! But yes am3+ motherboard with a am3+ CPU or am3 mobo with am3 cpu or am3 mobo with am2+ CPU. I kno I threw you off. Make sure you get 1600 ram so you can use your CPU at its full potential.

I’m to lazy to make a idea up as I’m on my phone

ok, this much is done:

The motherboard is Dual Channel or triple channel? Start with a Case, then Mobo/processor, then ram, then video, then PSU, then any other stuff. The socket type of the MOBO HAS TO match with the CPU or else you’ve got parts for two different computers. Why not just buy a DIY kit?

Back to the OP:

FWIW, I’m surprised that old Athlonx2 would top out at 2G of RAM. One way I’ve used to peek at what the computer needs w/ RAM is CPU-Z. I’d pull the clock speed off that and match with the memory needed. I’d bet that the tech that tried installing the memory put in the wrong kind (or even tried something like DDR3 vs. DDR2).

@ travisn - did you give up on that old ME machine entirely?

Yea, I’d rather not but I cant get anything to display. I even tried a totally different video card, but I haven’t tried the on board graphics port yet. That machine is probably the best one out of the 6 that I have as it accepts sata HD’s and has 4 memory banks. If you are following my driving sim build I did get a different computer to work but it’s not all that great, wont read sata, won’t boot from disk or usb, and only has 2 memory banks. Fixing that ME rig is beyond my capacity for now as I have no idea where to start. I might ask the ME computer admin for another mobo or something instead.

yeah i was thinking about it, and the next thing I’d try is the memory.

Edit: this is interesting http://news.softpedia.com/news/AMD-Not-Competing-With-Intel-Anymore-Goes-Mobile-237103.shtml

Well its too late now, I’m sure I’ll be fine for a few years regardless

Memory, huh? I didnt even touch the memory at all, just tried two monitors. I should have enough memory laying around to swap a few different variations in

I’m so lost wtf just happened here lol, and you can change the way the computer boots in the bios change what media to boot from or DVD drive, hard drive etc

it doesn’t post.

Technically we are talking about 3 different computers here; one I got from the ME department that doesnt display video anymore, one I got from someone that has xp on it and doesnt read from usb or disk, and the new one I am building from scratch. Plus about 5 parts computers. haha.

I can read did you read what he wrote? Lol

to answer his question it doesn’t read a disk maybe the cable is bad or the options are turned off in the bios. I.e USB disabled.

If you every wanna unload some spare computer parts lmk I’m looming to rebuild my collection of stuff…

yeah, he was talking about different computers and i think he meant the one he has working doesn’t have a sata controller.

I need to get that PSU soon.

I have one for sale.

I need 650+ watts with 1-3 pin and 1-4 pin vid connector. Anybody have one for a reasonable price?

it’s a 380w :frowning:

I need to rebuild my daytrading rig. I bought a quad video card not thinking it would be as deep as it is…it’s MASSIVE! I had to buy a new case to accommodate the depth of the card and I MAY get by with my PSU but was considering upgrading.
I have some older cases and maybe an older PC or 2 if anyone is looking. Nothing real current but I need to move some of my random stuff outta here. LOL

looking for 650w+, Gl@re has a 1000w
