can it ever be justified to buy a fast new car

People arent purchasing a 100k car just to be the best drag car they can get at that price point. It is the overall package and that is a cherry on top. Same reason you would drive that 135i as opposed to some haggard ass fbod or whatever that could go 11s for like 7k including the car.

Based on the OP it sounds the motivation is a fast car and times, not something for an all round feature of a daily driver that is also fast. If there is luxury features you like then yea, the 100k price tag will get you both but if the motivation is just speed, there is a lot of other options.

For sure. I still want an RS7! I think these run 10s on a tune too. Again not the craziest thing ever but man that is a slick overall package to me.

I’d be in for an RS6, especially if they made one in Avant trim. I might have to settle for the E63 wagon though…

That you can’t register in NY

There are ways around that. I just drove one last weekend.

I’m fully aware of ways around it like a dealer plate or do some illegal shit

Both of which don’t qualify as legally registering it.

Here is a picture, just cuz.

Would rather have an M5 and a daily driver than a single 100k sedan.

edit: nvmd, m5 starts at 93k so that doesn’t leave much room for a DD lol … cars seem to be getting very expensive these days.

This applies to more than just cars.

Cost of building a decent new construction home is generally around $150-175 per sqft, while the resale value is more around $100-125 per sqft, but people still do it all the time. There is something desirable about having NEW things. That being said, it all depends on how much you want to hold on to your money. Honestly if I made the money I do now, 15 years ago, I would seriously consider buying a new $100K+ car, but things change, I guess I’m slacking a bit. oh well.

X…

Yup. Used B8 S4 or XF supercharged are both fast cars that could be bought with an extended warranty and lightly modified to make faster while still retaining an extended warranty. Buy something just a few years old that has taken a huge hit.

I am not sure a lot of people posting in this thread know what a rs7 is. My only theory is that they keep posting examples of vehicles that are not large and are not 4 door. Or they dont have the residual value that a audi rs car has.

I spend around 10k a year on cars or automotive related activities. This falls into the catagory of toys or entertainment so i chalk it up as a loss even though some of that money is not an actual loss because it builds equity.

Would the purchase of a vehicle such as a rs7 loose more or less than 10k a year in value? It is hard for me to estamate because i dont follow new cars that well, and there are few examples of this limited production model.

I like the rs7 because of the package, luxury, racing heritage, styling, options, and the preformance figures are mind bending to me

They are considerably less expensive which is interesting but they loose value much faster than a rs model which may make purchasing a new one more expensive. More importantly than that is the fact that it has a different engine, different trans, different rear end, better interior (rs7). I dknt know if the rs gets a widebody or not honestly but the older ones used to.

Rs6 avant would be in my driveway if they made them here

I’d pay $100 large just for the huge Quattro badge and chicken wire seats.

You’re going to drive this year round? How many miles year? I assume since it would be your only car you’re not putting 1-2k on it a year

30k down is still 16k+ a year in car payments on a 5 year loan.

Maybe try the audi forums quickly searching yielded this

Although the S7 is not a direct comparison for depreciation, the only 2014 S7’s that I could find sold through dealer auctions went for $66K and $69K one with 10K miles, the other with 17K miles. Watch what this RS7 does on eBay, might give you an idea of what depreciation will look like…

My opinion would be to never buy new. If you really feel the need, just buy a current model year used car with low miles. Let someone else pay the new car depreciation. Then it can be another justification for purchase, can’t pass up a killer deal.

RS7 will do what the RS6 did… it will be great until it hits a cliff and then you can’t give it away.

I’d imagine the RS with 10k miles will be worth 25-30k less than new. Hard to say after that, but I’d imagine moving a 4 door auto (as awesome as it is) in 3 years for more than 65k is going to be challenging.

Why would anyone even risk it? It makes no sense.

Even if you could sell it in 3 years for 30k depreciation–

  1. You shouldn’t be buying it if you plan to sell it in 3 years. Heck, its financially irresponsible to buy many 30k dollar cars new if you plan to sell it in 3 years. The value is probably going to drop like a brick after 3 years.
  2. That’s 30 fucking grand in depreciation. You’d be losing more in depreciation than you’d be paying for the entire car for something reasonably priced. For what? Impressing nyspeed? I guarantee you wont be dropping panties with a 4 door audi.

Look at the cars.com 5 year cost of ownership. Even if they are accurate within 30%, they estimate the 5 year cost of ownership to be 117k, 3 year depreciation to be 50k. Shit, the tax alone would be 9k.

If you’re paying 1200+/mo in payments, what happens if the economy crashes? $10,000/year for a car hobby now might be easy, but if the economy shits the bed then you might be bankrupt because of a car. If you cant put a huge portion of money down on something like this as a “toy” then you can NOT justify it, no matter what your yearly car budget is.

I wouldn’t be caught dead in either of those cars, but your general logic is sound.
