Car Buying WTF Experiences

Someone pulled that crap selling a $1000 Civic hatch. I told him I was on my way, drove 45 minutes, to have him say "well, someone’s on their way and they offered me $1200. I got a little angry. I ended up paying $1100 because it was too good of deal to pass up. I was on my way to Rochester last summer to look at a Legacy, called the guy when I was 10 minutes away to get the final directions, and he told me someone just bought it. I was speechless for about 10 seconds, and just when I was about to scream an epic string of profanity into the phone, he goes “just kidding!!” That would have been awkward. It’s a $1500 Subaru that he owned for half the summer and he keeps texting me to see how the car is doing and for pics. Weird.

Here’s a good one. Guy is the winning bidder on an eBay auction with no reserve, and the guy refuses to sell him the car at that price. He re-listed it, and now people have run the price up over $22k for a 10 year old 5-series. They’re also sending random stupid questions and offering to trade modified Yugos.

Well you would think that but, he never mentioned another person, never mentioned I should hurry. Said the time I gave him was good and understood I had needs to comply to before coming. Yet, a simple call was too much to ask. Or HEY I have a guy coming, just hold off for an hour. Biggest piss off… EVARRR.

That absolutely ridiculous that a dealer would pull that. An agreed to price, is an agreed to price. No loyalty or moral compass nowadays.

I can’t really remember the last time I had someone jerk me around, while privately selling a car. Maybe the kid that bought my SRT4. I clearly stated the CF trunk was NOT included. Dude drove 5 hours to try me on for it, after he signed up for the car. No shot, wasn’t budging. Ended up charging him $250 more for it, on his way out the door.

My favorite part of selling a car is negotiating down to the very last penny, to find out the person needs to “sleep on it” and then returns when the car has been sold for more money to someone else. That’s about it.

Last year when I was looking for my ZHP I went to a dealer in NJ for what was supposed to be a mint car. When I got there the interior was thrashed, trunk was torn apart, check engine lights, whole driver side was smashed from a side swiped and already rusting quite bad from where the car was missing paint. Car was a complete joke and I had come all the way from Buffalo for a mint car. They tried to nock nearly 5k off it and I told them no.

Almost bought a 135i off the same lot, got them to nock 5k off that car because of how shitty the ZHP was and how far I had come for that car. Turns out the 135 had a major coolant leak and you could see that it was dripping from the car and they insisted that the leak wasn’t coming from that car. When I got home I ran the vin for shits and it came up totaled. They were trying to sell a totaled car for 28k, no wonder why they were going to let me drive off with it for 23…

I had a member from here come look at a truck I was selling. Half way through checking it out, he told me he had no money. Then he spent a half hour asking me ls1 swap questions.

The wife and I were trying to be a certified pre-owned Malibu from a dealership in Henrietta as a daily driver. The price of the window was a good starting point for a family hauler, so we stopped in. We decided to buy the car after a little driving around, the sales guy comes out with his “best price”. So I put the down payment plus the monthly payments into my phone to figure out what the selling price was…same as the window price. I tell him that’s too much for a Malibu and he goes back inside to “talk it over”. Comes back out with a new set of terms, numbers back into the phone, same price as before. I tell him he didn’t do shit on the price, back inside again to talk to his manager. Comes back out a third time, this time the numbers come out $50 more than the window price. We walked away laughing, they didn’t sell that car for another 6 months.

Same dealership, went it to buy a 2010 Chevy Equinox (brand new) and use my GM employee discount. The price is already known, so no negotiations. The sales guy has us fill out the paper work, give them a deposit check, tells us to come back tomorrow so they can “dress” the vehicle for us. Go back the next day and the same sales guy tells us they don’t honor GM employee pricing anymore and I owe them a few thousand more. I ask to see the manager, who “isn’t available today”. My wife calls her bank and cancels the check. I call an 800 number available through GM to bitch about dealership issues and they are able to void my contract with the dealership.

Same dealership also took my boss’ C6 Z06 and used it for customer test drives/rides so they didn’t have to put any miles on the one they had on their lot while he had it in for new rear tires.

If they’ve screwed you and others over so much, why withhold the name?

This sucks but I totally understand it after doing a lot of selling on craigslist lately. So many, “I’m definitely going to buy it” people who just never show. My new policy is first with agreed price cash at my door wins.

Some ghetto retard tried to buy/trade my civic back in 2008. The one dude spent 20 minutes trying to convince me to trade his rusty integra, while his clearly drunk friend walked back to my garage, started the car and proceeded to do a burnout INSIDE THE GARAGE.

It was sketchy to the point that I was afraid they were coming back to steal it later that night.

i would have called the police.

O’Connor Chevy in Henrietta

That dude’s tried to buy my Nissan so damn many times, but I keep telling him I won’t take paypal.

No good stories here. Just a few trying way to hard to be all alpha aggressive over the phone. If a buyer ever says “Are there any, and I mean any…” you can bank on them being full of shit.

One dude buying my boat had me send him extra pictures, said he’s serious but he can’t find anything that meets his standards, somehow mentioned past military service, made arrangements to take monday off to drive here from corning to have me take him out on the water, lots of nonsense about being straight forward and honest, blah blah blah. The last thing I ever heard from him was “We should be on for tomorrow, I just have to show it to my wife.”

Dont go to Webster Imports. 2 bad experiences with them. Both times cars were not ready for pickup when they were supposed to be. Parts for the cars that said would be fixed were not and when going to fix the, required months to get money back from them. Lack of care these guys give once you sign the paper saying you are purchasing. The list could keep going on and on and on. I decided to just let everything go because of the headache. I was going to contact someone about a horrible business practice and how to make it known that they suck.

This shit drives me crazy.

back before i bought my e46 i looked at an e36 vert in brockport, the guy at the dealer said the car was mint, no rust, nice interior, runs great. so i take the afternoon off work to go out and look at it, and when i get to the dealer there is noone there and the car isnt there. so i call the number, he picks up and says hes around the corner a minute away and will be right there. when he shows up hes driving the car. i see right away theres rust, the interior sucks. he leaves the keys in it and says go ahead take it for a test drive, didnt even ask for my license or anything. so whatever, i hop in and drive it since i drove out there anyways. didnt plan to buy it but figure i could take it around the block to compare to other cars i was looking at. first thing i notice is somethings busted in the transmission, loose as a hookers vagina and couldnt differentiate between reverse and 1st. then i take it around the block, runs ok for about a minute. coolant gage is pegged…fuck. i pull over and park it, call the dealer. i say it overheated, he says bring it back. when i hang up with him a cop pulls up behind me with his lights on, i explain what happened and he says okay and takes off…so at this point im like fuck it. drove it the few miles back with the temp pegged and pull into the dealer give him the keys and say the cars not what he said it was and i was done here. he says hell fix it and give me 100k warrenty…lol i ignored him got in my car and left.

This is an all too common occurrence. Before I bought mine I “nearly” bought a CB/Imola M, got to buying point in which I had the car insured for pickup, cash in hand and the buyer bailed, no phone (two contact numbers) email, nothing. It worked out highly in my favor, but for this reason I really shy away from putting deposits down as I would have been out it for SURE.

I always do desposits via credit card/paypal on a “burn” account so I’m covered if I have to goto my credit card company and make a dispute I don’t end up with a locked paypal account that I normally use.

I would totally understand that… if I didn’t put a fucking deposit down.

There is a big difference between “I want the car, I can come look at it tomorrow” and “I’m leaving my house right now to come check it out”. Once someone is actually on the road, you’re a total piece of shit to sell it to someone else. Especially when the person is driving several hours. Also, inviting more than one person to look at it at the same time, unless you inform the second person that the car may be sold to the first guy, is shitty as well. That said, I’ve had people tell me someone else is coming to look at a car or parts, and they actually called me back later to let me know they were indeed sold. Not everyone is a selfish asshole.

A few years back when I still lived in New Jersey, I sold my 96 celica with a 3sgte swap (god i miss her). This one idiot had me drive an hour and a half to his place in philly because he didn’t have a car. From there him and his buddies did the whole “inspection” looking for every minor imperfection. Well, after hauling ass around his neighborhood in the car he straight up told me he liked it but he wants an engine he could turbo…bahaha

:fail:

In the add it mentioned how it had the 3sgte engine along with the mileage etc, he even looked under the hood. Apparently he overlooked it lol. I just shook my head and walked away, nothing like having your baby go to a bad home.

Damn…a '96 Celica with 3sgte…very cool combo…

I have had my fair share of these experiences, too. Mostly when I’m selling a car, though…

Our society has lost all respect and decency for itself. I truly believe that. And I blame text messaging/social media/technology for the most part. It sounds ludicrous, but with how easy it has become to “communicate,” most people have lost all ability to do so. Ever notice how people (mainly younger folk) barely look each other in the eyes anymore when they talk? It scares me more every day…
