So i was just driving on the highway and i noticed that the car was starting to bog a little, like i could feel it in the rpms as it dropped just a little. It felt like “pops” and then afterwards, it got a lot worse and it was really hard to rev and the car just died. Couldn’t start the car anymore. We think that it could be the fuel pump but we can hear it kinda working when we turn the key twice. Anyone have any ideas? By the way, after the tow home, i managed to start the car but it died shortly after.
thats kinda wt happened to me… it turned out to be the spark plug wire… check if r wires are toasted or anyhting… i started losing power int e highway too… but then… i also had a leaking rad… haha… so i had white smoke comming out at the same time…
sounds like you ran outa gas lol
fuel pump would be the first thing id check too, its weird that you say you can hear it though
he had a 1/3 tank when it happened. 8)
I could hear the pump priming when he turned the ignition on, but maybe it’s really weak? I don’t know what a struggling fuel pump sounds like
alternator died and drained the battery?
exact same thing happened to my ka powered truck… I replaced the plugs, wires, cap/rotor, and ignition coil (all spare parts I had at home) and it runs perfect now. It’s definately one of those.
Hmm the weird thing is that i have replaced all my wires, and distributor cap recently. I checked the wires but they seem fine. And yeah i had about just under half tank of gas when it happened.
And no it’s not the alternator that died, the car starter cranks the car fine but it just won’t start.
get a walboro…i bet its ure fuel pump bro.
Could be some shit caught up on the pump screen too. Go Walboro like V said
Marky has a walboro, just needs to throw it in.
Get on it!
this happened to me in my beater and it was the leads on the fuel sending unit.
we cleaned them up and Chris re-soldered them and it is now fine.
this is a very common problem on these cars, the fuel sending unit is exposed to corrosion etc…
its super easy to check for, do that first.
if it looks good, try the ignition stuff mentioned above,
okay im installing the walbro but i got a few questions, what do i do with the orange hose that’s connected to the stock fuel pump, it’s jut a lilte hose like 4 inches long and its connected to the stock fuel pump. The walbro doesnt have an inlet for that hose.
Also, what do i do for wiring? how would i connect the wire from the walbro from fuel pump? Mine is a used one and the red and black wires have been cut a little. Do i just cut the stock fuel pump wire and connect it ? should i use electrical tape or what?
yeah, don’t worry about the little hose… and the wiring just needs to be twisted together and secured (i used electrical tape and zip-ties).
it’s pretty straight forward, really.
theres a good write up here with pics
nevermind… after changing the fuel pump, turns out the car is still fucked, not as bad but it keeps dying on me now.
See if this sounds familiar
nah that’s not it, car will rev untill redline, no rpm cut or anything, car just won’t start now. cranks but won start, i changed the spark plugs and fuel pump already thouhg.
