me while presenting my license, ownership and insurance: “i’d like a 10-day trip permit please”
countergirl: “you need plates for that”
me: “what?”
countergirl: “you need plates for a temporary permit”
me: “uh… i need an etest before i can get plates. thats why i need a temp.”
countergirl: “it’s changed”
me: “what?”
she goes on to explain that the days of 10-day trip permit papers are over. as of july 28 you are required to buy plates ($20) and now there is a temporary STICKER (a red T) that you attach to said plate. when you get your etest and/or safety, then you put your regular sticker over top of it.
maximum 2 temps per plate (per year i assume? she didnt specify)
yup. it’s on the mto website. i went in at the beginning of this month to get a temp for my car. had to drop money to buy plates, and then gave me a temp sticker which last about a month.
It actually is changed. I registered my Skyline 2 days ago and I have new plates with the sticker on it. That way when u get the sticker u just through it over top of the T and ur all good.
oh… well then maybe mine is special. the sticker i received had no T on it and simply says SEP09. So… yea i dunno. haha. And i got the sticker at the beginning of august. and the lady said it expires in september.
Those temp plates were joke. I got pulled over all of the time following the rules. And still would get asked for license registration etc… when I pointed to the plate. Which isn’t just cause…other that “just cause” you’re an idiot.
I tried sticking one to the back window and got pulled over for not having it on the front. Then I ran my old plates with the temp…threatened with $500 fine. There was no way around getting pulled over.
Such as circus.
Oh well no more flipping cars without paying the taxes. It was a good run :-p
have to get a temp plate tommorrow. The lady behind the desk told me today about the new process. Just wondering how insurance works with these plates? I have insurance on another car.
Can someone please clarify how this works?? Part of the issue is that I just want to be able to drive it to get safety and etested before the winter and insure it next spring if possible?
Temp plates are 10 days trip permits, you can get 1 a year, if the vehicle isn’t safetied or etested and you can get up to a maximum of 4 a year if the vehicle is safetied but not etested. You get 10 days of driving under your insurance, works as a normal insured vehicle would, when you get the plate, you call your insurance company, they will treat it as a normal license plate and insure you on a monthly pay schedule. Once the plate expires, call back in to the insurance company and cancel it, otherwise you will continue to get billed for it. After that, use rubbing alcohol to get the gew from the sticky strips off your windshield. Have fun.
