Getting the 240SX on the road... classic dilemma.

Hey all. So it’s getting close to the time when I can finally get my piece of junk 240SX on the road. It started from a big ball of rust and it’s now something that resembles a car, but I need some help.

This thing needs a windshield, has to be safetied, e-tested, and registered. I am not capable of doing any of these things in my driveway.

To drive anywhere I need to register the car and get plates. To do that I need a windshield, safety and e-test. To get a windshield, safety and e-test, I need to drive the car to a shop. To drive the car to the shop I need to register the car and get plates. Endless circle.

This is one shitty predicament. How am I supposed to get this thing on the road? I don’t exactly have a flatbed to carry it around, and I’m trying to avoid spending money for a tow truck, to have it possibly fail a safety and e-test.

Any ideas?

most glass places should be able to come to you. then you hop on the bus to the MTO and get a 10-day permit
then insure the car, get on the road and get it safetied and e-tested

Reading up on temporary permits a while back I was under the impression the car had to be safetied to have one? If I could just get a temp permit that would make things VERY easy for me.

no safety needed. the point of the 10 day permit is so you can drive to wherever it is you need to get it safetied

^^ u do need a safety

i dont know where you’re getting your info from but i fully got a 10 day permit and drove my car to get it safetied, all without a safety. the only thing you need is insurance

That’s allowed within 6 days of the purchase of the car.

From the MTO…

To apply for a trip permit, take the following items to any ServiceOntario Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Office:

  • your original fit vehicle permit;
  • if the permit is not registered in your name, a Bill of Sale from the person named on the permit to you, if available;
  • if the vehicle is registered as unfit, a Safety Standards Certificate (SSC) is also required;
  • name of your insurance company and policy number. The vehicle to which the trip permit will be attached must be insured at the time when the trip permit is issued.So now… any more ideas? I guess I’ll have to trailer the stupid thing around or something. Uhaul tow dolly, I guess.

wtf? 6 days?

the permit is for getting all that shit but u have to have insurence on another car and the 10 day permit is joint with that and also the car getting the permit the ownership has to be in the same name so if u drive ur mom or dads car and ur 240 is in ur name u cant get it also i think u can only get a10 day permit once for that car not sure tho

^ ^ ^ nah not only once but there is some sort of limit ^ ^ ^
when i had my first 240, all i needed was proof of insurance on the vehicle ( i managed to pick up a temp 30 day insurance), and they gave me the sticker for my window.

  • the whole point of the 10 day is so you can drive the car around and not tow it from shop to shop to get the safety and emissions slips.
  • the permit is only suposed to be used for these purposes mentioned above. they catch you joy riding and its like a 150$ ticket.

since i actually know from experience i’ll answer about temp permits.

question #1: has the ownership been transferred to your name yet?

if the answer to question #1 is “yes” then question #2: does it say “PASS-FIT” at the top of the ownership?

if the answer to question #2 is “yes” then your car is already safetied and you can get 4 temp permits per year

if the answer to question #2 is “no” then you’re SOL and you’ll have to get it towed to a shop for safety or get a fake safety which i don’t recommend.

now if the answer to question #1 is “no” then back to the PASS-FIT question.

if it’s a PASS-FIT title and it’s not in your name yet you can just make up a bill of sale and date the back of the ownership to today and get a temp permit.

if it’s not a PASS-FIT title you’re SOL again and have to get it towed.

you also have to have insurance on the car to get a temp permit.

you are only allowed one temp permit before you get the car safetied and put into your name unless you can come up with a really good story to make the mto people think that you actually didn’t get a temp permit before even though it’s in their computers that you had one… it’s not easy but it’s been done.

i’m not sure if there is a ticket for driving with a trip permit other than to a shop, but i’ve been pulled over probably close to 10 times driving with a temp permit and never had the cop mention anything about it other than to check if it was expired. you will probably get pulled over driving with it, police like to make sure that they are valid.

hope that helps.

Thanks a lot simplemind7. Looks like I’m going to have to drag it to a shop, help much appreciated.

why not change the date on the bill of sale to a couple of days ago they wont know the diff then you can get your first temp permit

dude if you havent got a permit for that car yet and you havent put it into your name yet why not just make up a new bill of sale with the puchase date changed then all you need is a insurance policy then you can get one

good info, let me spam this and add to the question,

Can I register a car without insurance? I want to buy one but keep it off the road for a few months until I can sell the one im driving. In paper legal terms, is a transfer different from registering it?

Because it’s been in my name for like 6 months, sitting broken in my backyard :slight_smile:

Insure car
Get trip permit
Go get your shit done
Take off trip permit.
Drive Around.

he can’t, it has an unfit title beacuse it’s in his name and not safetied.

I was in a similar predicament, & I had just arrived in canada. Make an arrangement with a shop for safety & etest and ask them for a dealer plate to drive ur car to them. Helps if u r on friendly terms with them, but be aware that they will prob’ly charge more since they know u r in a bind. If u have a plate handy (from a friend) just drive down to a nearby shop with it. If u can get to a shop nearby using backroads where there arent many cops u cud chance it, but i wouldnt recommend it. Why not tow it, it will cost a 100bucks which is peanuts compared to what u will be spending on ur car eventually, and if u get caught it will be whole lot more expensive, not to mention drivin without insurance, try gettin a reasonable insurance policy after that.

Please explain how he cannot do this.
