obtaining a temp trip permit or plates

what the hell? I went to the MTO office the other day and provided them with my lisence registration and insurance. I wanted a temp permit or plate so i can drive my car to get it safety and etest.the lady at the counter said i need to have my ownership say fit to get a temp permit/plate WTF?

Ya because when you registered your car, you registered it as “unfit” which means you need to tow it for a safety

Nope, she doesn’t know what she’s talking about. I have done it many times before. Go to another attendant or another MTO office.

^^ then you’ve done it on a FIT ownership

you dont get temp plates for unfit cars

thats just how it works

then whats the point of getting temp plates or permit if your car is fit?

spd-dmn is right, you only get a temp if you already have insurance and a safety.

I really only use a temp to drive around before I get an e-test.

the nice thing about temps now is they give you a real plate.

suckers! haha

No such thing as a temp permit anymore, they make you buy your plates either way. If you have safety and etest you get your normal sticker, if not, they give you a temp sticker, good for 30 days that attaches to your plate like a normal sticker. Website says you must provide proof of insurance now as well, before it was a fill in the blank on some form, now I believe they actually need to see a pink slip. This doesn’t really help ya in any way but it’s useful info for anyone.

Just tow it man, these days it takes more to get a car on the road especially when renewing plates or getting a car on the road after a new ownership. You need safety, ownership, especially insurance! lol

^^ not quite

a trip permit (aka temp sticker) is valid for 10 days

you can get a maximum of 2 temp stickers in a one-year period

if you JUST bought a car and didn’t get a safety, you CAN STILL get a trip permit WHEN YOU TRANSFER THE OWNERSHIP into your name. HOWEVER this only works if the vehicle shows fit on the old ownership

accelr8: did you just buy the car and try to transfer the ownership when the lady told you this? or was the car already in your name as unfit?

it was already under my name as unfit. since i have insurance and all i can’t just buy plates and get that (T) sticker?

spd-dmn is completely correct. If your car is registered unfit, you have to tow to get a safety. If it was “fit” before (with old owner or registered to you as fit and your safety lapse’s) they will allow you to get a trip permit to get a new one, they will not give one to an unfit car or a car that was previously unfit before transfer of ownership.

Put fake plates and get some one to follow behind you. Get a safety and e-test (same place hopefully) Leave the car there, go boogie to the ministry and get yer plates and sticker…go attach them and drive off the shops property legit  Fuck temps, their for pussys.

Your car is unfit and therefor you will not be able to under any circumstance get a trip permit. Your car should have been in a accident and bought back after an insurance claim and repaired, therefor you now have a ||UNFIT|| Car. They don’t know if that was the case or if you just got it transferred without showing a safety. So do what ya gotta to get it going on the road.

pretty much this. if you dont want to tow it then grow some balls.

^^+2 if u got someone following behind u its very rare a cops gonna run ur plates through the system

I have been driving the last 3 weeks on my 10 day because i have been too busy at work to get an etest, have been luck so far(finger crossed)…but my car doesn’t stick out …:biglol:

wrong, 10 days. but cool story bro

i has the same problem with my car i just got a fake saftey or real but if its unfit id say fake and you go in and bam there is your 10 day and all you need is an e test witch im still working on since my sr dosnt wanna pass i think im 2 months exp plates.

Thanks for the correction, lol I definately used mine for 30 days… 10 days that’s dumb

You can get the 10 day temp pass which will give you a ‘T’ sticker on your plates or new plates with no safety or no etest.

Before when they used to give you a temp pass for the upper right of your windshield then you needed the car to be “fit”. I’m not sure if its changed at the same time as they decided to give the T sticker on the plates, but

TRUST ME I AM 100% SURE I AM RIGHT. We just did this for my dads car 2 months ago. My daily 6 months ago. My gfs car 1 year ago, and so on.

I even did it with my kouki in March of 2009 when I first got it. If you guys didnt know this, now you know, take advantage of it.

But you do need to have your insurance policy number. It doesnt techinically need to be insured at that moment.

Plus I think (not 100%) if you buy a car and put it under your name it is automatically insured (if you already have a policy) for 15 days.

I found this out when I was with a broker that was closed on weekends and I was planning on buying a car on the weekend but it wasnt 100% for sure. This was 3 years ago tho.
