clicking in the engine?

I recently bought a 1990 240sx that was in reasonable condition.
Recently i had LOTS of trouble starting the car, and found out that it was because I had broken the cheap Bosch o2 sensor :spank:
So today I replaced the o2 sensor with a nice and beefy stock o2 sensor. However, now the engine’s making this CRAZY loud clicking noise. I’m not much for troubleshooting engine problems - can anybody offer any advice on this one? It happens all the way through the RPMs and lasted my entire ride home from work (about 10-15minutes). I looked in the bay and didn’t see anything wrong, but it’s nighttime, so visibility is limited.

any help?

an o2 sensor doesnt prevent the car from starting. try taking it to a mechanic

i did.
took it to Greg Vann Nissan in town.
They gave it a quick look and noted the busted o2 sensor would cause the car to be in open loop while the engine was still hot, seeing as it would send either bunk or no signal to the ECU.

i would agree with jesse an o2 would not cause the engine to not start.
any how you have to pin point were the nose is coming from. Dose it change pich when you rev the engine? Is the noise slightly different when the engine is cold or hot. Use a long scew driver with the handle on your ear and touch varyous part of the engine to see what area its the loudest.
that can give you a clue what it might be.

get the fuck out of here. dont ask for help and give lip. Take it to someone whos going to charge you $55/h. You got played by that mechanic. Ya they took your money. so dont roll your eyes at me.

If its obd2 them it might have and effect. I drove with my 02 unpuled for a few weeks by accdent and i never even noticed.

When cars cant use there sensor becase there busted they have on board peramitors that will tell them what to run insted and stay in open loop.

As for nosies ppl need to see the car in person you just cant say its making a clicking noies it could be many things.

Ya, I have driving around with my or unplugen on the SR and it was totally fine, I barly noticed a diff besides running a little rich

got oil in your motor ? lifters can tick from being dry…

timing chain rattle ? broken guide perhaps ?

if its an SR… injectors click LOUD! and could be miss-took for an engine tick

engine had no oil… that could do it.
filled it up, burned LOTS of oil.

my only guess is a dead headgasket…

The car has lots of trouble starting… gotta let it sit at Accessory for like 20seconds then it JUST BARELY STARTS.
I’m gonna replace the battery tomorrow (have a spare sitting around) and see if that helps… but i fear that’s not it.

so 2 days ago… my engine was completely out of oil again…
ticking happened again… IMMEDIATELY stopped at a gas station and bought some oil and put it in - ticking gone.
so the ticking is from the lifters, most likely…

but now my new prob… why’s the engine drinking oil? i mean… 4L in 1 month, that’s pretty nuts - i drove like 1500km in that time, but still… that’s a lot of frickin’ oil to chug back in 4 weeks.

i’m still leaning towards headgasket - but my troubleshooting skills are pretty limited.

headgasket… valve guide seals… piston rings…

could be one of a few things.

Check the drain plug on the oil pan, and the oil filter, they could be lose.

look for any oil spots underneath the car after its been parked over night, to see if there is any leaks, compression test your engine, also check that the PCV system is functioning properly, good luck

Yup…you’ve got to find out whether it’s burning oil or leaking oil.

First check your oil pan & gasket, drain plug & gasket, oil filter, oil pressure sending unit, valve cover gasket etc and look for areas underneath your engine that have notable oil presence…you could even replace some of the gaskets as a good maintenance/cleanliness move.

As far as burning oil, usually this is a sign of an old or possibly even damaged engine. So get a compression test, not-so-great or bad results will tell you if burning oil is the problem and to what degree. Blue smoke on revs, cold starts etc will also hint to this…

Chances are the engine may be getting a little tired, or maybe if you overfilled, that may have caused an issue also. What kind of oil are you using and what is the mileage?

Good luck and make sure to track it down and let us know.

i can assure you it’s not leaking oil… it’s parked in the same spot every night (my driveway) and there’s NO oil there…

I’ll bring the car to Nissan next week… they do all the labour for free for me… so i’ll see if they wanna tear apart the engine in the corner over the week

I know this one …

It’s a SOHC right?

Oil galleys are probably plugged.

If you keep driving it like this, your cam will seize.

Your lifters are running dry, that’s why they’re clicking.

That’s not your only problem though.

I have a feeling if you were to take the car out and have someone follow you …

If you floor it, I’m pretty sure you will get the death smoke.

Not black, not blue, but brown/black.

That’s raw oil.

Sounds like an oil feed problem that has now claimed your rings and possibly more.

I could be way off, but that’s how Danner’s S13 bit it.

Used to use a lot of oil, then it started using so much the lifters would run dry while driving. You’d cruise along at 130 for a few kms no problem, then they’d just start ticking like crazy.

He used to keep 4l of oil on him at all times, just pull over and add when it got noisy.

Eventually it just stopped running. Lo and behold the cam had seized and the rest of the motor tried to keep spinning it. Lots of broken. The cam was no longer being oiled. The valvetrain oiling on the SOHC is kind of scary, it’s all splash oiled by (IIRC) like 2 holes.

The reason it’s so hard to start is that it’s got no compression. Once enough oil spills into the combustion chambers it will get enough compression to start.

Or that’s one theory.
