my 86 rx7 has 3M all the way around the lower body. id say you would need a good detail. not to be a dick, but if you were really into your car and it really bothered you that much, why not just get it fixed? it always seems like your trying to find a scapegoat for your problems.
I’m not sure when people say “clay bar will fix that” without actually seeing what it is, if they actually know what they’re talking about. But since I always know what I’m talking about, I’ll opine.
Clay is wonderful, but you’re basically sheering away the contamination. And possibly some of the paint. It’s not a magic contamination magnet.
I’m not sure if clay bar will fix that (ta-da).
It’s worth a try. Of course, properly maintaining the paint may have prevented this. I.E. claying, polishing, and sealing. If this is a reoccurring problem then all the claying and polishing in the world is not going to be a great idea for the life of the paint job and you may want to bitch out Subaru for having awful paint.
That rust spot may be a piece of metal that had been lodged into the paint, and now it’s rusting. This is common in older cars, but new cars sometimes get strange contamination during the shipping process. You can probably tell if it’s on the surface or actually down to the metal, something none of us can tell from that photo. Clay bar will take care of something like this if it isn’t too bad.
what you don’t understand is this is a BRAND new car… it has 4,500 miles on it…and every other 2008 impreza owner is having the same problem…I’d rather get it repainted with quality paint, rather than have to buff it and wax it every 3K miles.
I’ll try buffing it out tomorrow, but I can tell by the texture that the paint is not contaminated, but it is actually sandblasted down.
I’ll post up more pics after I clay/clean/polish.
Also, when I first got the car I washed the car with wax-removing soap… clayed the entire car and polished the paint and put on a SIMONIZ wax/sealant.
This is a manufacture defect…not a neglect thing.
Trust me, I take car of my paint. I’m actually somewhat good at doing that.
sucks - my paint is ‘ok’… I get rust spots in the clearcoat every winter though, have to claybar, polish, seal etc every spring. It’s really annoying
It’s nothing like what you have on the rear though… that is pretty rough
western new york OVER SALTED ROADS are awesome for paint.
that clear coat does look pretty weak tho. My 02 has the same look in that area. at 55k miles.
MUDFLAPS would have prevented this a lot.
I guess my biggest issue is, this is a brand new car, with a warranty. Technically all I should have to do is routine maintenance and put gas in the car.
If this car was 5 years old, I would not care, I would take care of it my self, but it’s not and I’m not paying Subaru 25 grand, so that my paint will fall off, I want it fixed at no cost to myself.
I stopped by Subaru today and talked to the service manager, He goes:
“yeah, the paint is chipping off from road dirt” - no shit
I replied “well don’t you think it’s pretty shitty that the paint is falling off a $25K car in the first few month of ownership?”
Basically he said to bring the car back in the spring and he will talk to the regional manager about getting the car resprayed.
