Some of you have seen my car and know I’ve been running electronic exhaust valves for many years. Perhaps this will explain it.
For reference, this is my current exhaust system…fabricated by Sasha at SGM.
The 3" downpipe, a vband off a standard 2871r. Here you can see the beginnings of the “closed” exhaust section.
The full system ready to be bolted up.
And the results. These are two back-to-back done runs done within 10 seconds of each other. The only changes done are the opening of the valve from inside the cabin. (Solid lines are exhaust open). As you can see there were huge gains in spool and torque.
This is a stock SR20DET Redtop motor that I got for $400. It has Apexi HG, ARP Studs, GT2871R .64, Nismo 740cc…tuned with Autronic SM4. This is a stock cam, stock manifold car.
I basically wanted to test how easy it was to make 300ft-lbs on the least mods on an SR20DET. The car made 335rwhp and 305tq at 15psi with no boost control.
now i have a question , ive seen these exhausts done on n/a’s on tv and what not really sick idea and ive thought it many times for my silvia, but with a turbo do you not have some required back pressure ? what kinda money did you shell out in the end? what would the difference be is you dumped it after the cat?
Haha, I love it when you type Dan… I can always hear you say exactly what you type.
Impressive numbers, I’m really hoping to see you driving more next year.
Can you get quick release V-band clamps? I’ve always wanted to have a Y with a block off plate… I’d get in too much trouble with a remote operated cut-out.
Theo, I wouldn’t worry about a vband for that…I would just weld a 3 bolt flange on the end of the Y and use a plate held on with butterfly bolts. That way you could just reach under the car and spin the bolts off with you fingers…no tools required.
OH…and YEAH. When I took the car for a spin after I tuned it I was shaking like a leaf for like 20 minutes. I miss driving fast cars. I plan to do a lot of track driving next year…may even try this “drifting” thing if the mood strikes me.
Oh and I just made a shitty little test drive video… as I back out of the shop you can hear me open the dump.
The 3 bolt flange was the original plan, but a v-band would be even quicker!! And less chance of bolts loosening off… Do they make v-band quick clamps or are they all a single bolt type?
