very true
it is so true. Its turning into a lifestyle instead of a motorsport.
Andrew.
What did you expect…
Has anyone else noticed the quality of people joining the forums?
Has any said anything besides the same guys that did a year before?
No, then stop bitching and deal with it…
Plus, let me tell you something about the degredation of women… They choose to do what they do… They aren’t forced at gunpoint to pose in front of a car… If anyone is degrading women, it’s themselves…
why do you always personalize shit Bob. This will now turn into a discussion of the forums. I wanted a good discussion about the drifting scene around the world… not this forum…
Discuss only the drift scene PLEASE!!!1

there are points that i would a grre with and some that i wouldnt agree with. you cant take sponsors out of motorsports, if you want the comptetors to be the best in the world and compete at the highest level, they have to get paid and if there are no sponsors no one will pay them, they certainly cant live off of what they get for winning alone, Miki received 1 million yen for winning d1 this year, thats not even 10,000 US, thats next to nothing, and he won first in the elite drifting league in the world, sure the FD prizes are bigger but still, if they had to pay there own way these guys would need day jobs and im sure that most day jobs dont allow for travelling around the country, and to other countries every other week so ya its kind of necessary, and women just go along with it, thats just the way it works, girls are to cars what butter is to toast
but i do agree about everything else, epsecially formula D, they have turned it into the nopi of drifting

its very sad, but true. It is becoming excedingly hard to find car mags without the models all over the pages…
Turbo, Import Racer, Sport compact car (within reason) and a few others are decent for that, and also provide good reading.
And these “ricers”, as the author wrote, are causing the jump in prices for the 240’s out there. But the one good thing i see about this issue is the abundance of aftermarket performance parts for the cars.
Thank you for a great post. Yes NA is taking a wrong approach to this as they do with everything else. In UK, Australie and Japan this sport is a motorsport. Everything in North America goes the way of a fad/lifestyle for the sake of being cool.

Maybe because we’re practically at the center of it?
Our situation is a perfect example of whats happeneing to drifting as a whole. When scientists test soil do they take all the soil and test it? No, they take sample. Think of SON as a drifting sample…
It’s not personal, it’s perfectly logical… And I’m tired of hearing people bitch about it… If you don’t like it, you can always choose another sport to play… like lawn bowling…
Questions?
Theres no solution to it. Drifting is intense and looks cool, therefore people
will be drawn toward it. Thats just how it is.
You can’t tell someone they are a ricer and that they are just a poser and
that they should go away. Even if they suck, they can still be a part of the
scene.
There will be more and more n00bs as time goes on, just accept it and be
proud that you’ve been around longer than them or something, I don’t
know.
I personally hate the fact that drifting has become so mainstream.

 Ok I see where your coming from Bob. Yes it is a good example. I may yet jump boat into something else, rallying has always spraked my interest but I can’t afford that kind of racing at the moment. In comparison I was not attracting to this for sake of being cool, I do it cause its fun and I enjoy many types of motorsports. Its attarcting people that have never been interested in motorsports, they are just interested cause they think the might be cool
The media is to blame for all this, they make it seem like the cool thing to do. If you drift you will be cool, which is so wrong. I’m repeating myself lol
Andrew.
I think most of the SON population is into drifting. But what about the ones who arent? I enjoy a good drift session, yes, but a few of us are also concentrated on grip driving aswell.
Maybe when road racing first came out, they thought it would be a fad. People probably tried it on the streets, and did it to be cool… Hell, they still do.
But in the end, the people who still do it on the track are the hardcore guys. They are the ones who are doing it for the love of the sport. So if we wait it out, we’ll eliminate the ones who are doing it because people say its cool. Thats when we’ll be left with the true enthusiasts.
This has been beaten to death countless times… why do we need to go through it again…
Everyone will regurgitate the same thing the person before him has…
Thus it’s not worth dicussing…
That’s my point.
Translation: I used to read import magazines such as PASMAG. I just got
a new issue in the mail and you can barely see the widebody supra on the
cover because there is a giant fat spanish chick covering the whole car.

Drifting as a valid motorsport -is- an issue to be debated - whether or not you love and embrace it, accept and respect it, or shrug it off as a ricer fad.
People always ask me if I got a 240 for drifting. I didn’t. I got it because of its rear wheel drive config, awesome weight distribution, low cost, good looks, and its potential to make something out of it. I have equal amounts of respect for an S car that’s been built up for drift, drag, just a fun street car or a serious road racer. That doesn’t mean I don’t like to whip the tail out myself or make a (piss poor) attempt at linking some turns. Personally, I think drifting is cool in its own right and I think there definitely is a high level of skill involved in controlling the car at and beyond the threshold of adhesion. Does it constitute a valid category of motorsports? It’s a tough call. The winner is judged subjectively and because of this many will argue that it is simply a show-off contest or an exhibition of driver skill.
I’m not going to even attempt to resolve the issue because a) I don’t feel like pissing anyone off and b) I myself don’t know what to make of it entirely. I’m not convinced that drifting has a place in the motorsport world equal to that of FIA F1, GT, or WRC racing. But I see the merits in its development and I -definitely- see drifting as valid competition. It is a great way to practice one’s car control skills while at the same time providing large amounts of enterainment to onlookers. Plus it’s a shitload of fun and ultimately very rewarding when you know you pulled off a maneuver that few people can match.
That having been said, I equally despise the kids who get all hyped into the scene because they think it’s the next “big thing” and get “drift style” body kits to look cool. Same kids who buy the kits, run an open diff, and think they are the next Tsucyhia or Takumi. Kids who think ID is real.
Right now drifting is mainstream and it’s causing problems. A lot of people to get into it for the wrong reasons.
Residual effects include, like others have mentioned above, soaring prices of our beloved small, cheap, rwd Japanese cars. Then there’s the presence of posers who give the real enthusiasts a bad name.
Is drifting as a mainstream activity a fad? I hope so. It’s only a matter of time before it dies down in the public eye and returns to the underground where its true fans can enjoy and appreciate it for what it is without any “outside help”.

yo last night i was drifting man i got sooooo sideways oh man it was insane.
(realistically they only lost grip for an instant and over correced and tank slapped)
Thats what pisses me off the MOST.
great piece.
its true that drifting is becoming mainstream… well no, it IS mainstream.
but like anything, it will come and go and those of us who are true enthusiasts will be here when the dust settles, drifting without the pretenders.
all i can say is, welcome to society. millions of people get paid to find fads and exploit them for every last penny. drifting is just the flavour of the week. just like altezza’s and street racing was 2 years ago (notice how the hardcore guys still do it, but all the gino’s and ricers have sort of faded away)
the fast and the furious 3 is due out late this year or early 06’… starring vin diesel, taking place in japan, based around drifting. oh yes, icing on the cake of destruction for all of us. but hey, at least the value of our cars will double or triple (try buying a 93 civic in 2001 without getting raped)
the lucky thing about drifting is that its not just something any ricer can do with his moms car, like you can do with straight line racing. the bad thing is that there will be accidents related to drifting in the news this coming summer, i can just tell.
keep it real, represent it as best you can.
mike, well said
sasha, i fully agree… especially when they dont know what there doing
Then theres the kids like me… who dont have an FR yet and resort to some handbraking in an FF in some snowy parking lots.
But is it not the true love for the sport (sport: term used lightly) that brings people to practise on their own time (track or abondoned area) and want to get better? I dont think the “cool” factor applies there.
Many people probably think i am a ricer, and joined this site just because i was joining the fad of drifting. To tell you the truth, drifting has always appealed to me, even before i knew what it was. Before i was interested in 240s (many people know) i was going after DSMs. When i looked at what the sport of drifting entails, i never could have seen myself forking out money for tires, clutch’s, trannys etc. Then again, i looked at my options with a FF DSM. The only thing that i could possibly do is make my car be fast in drag and circuit (unprobable for my wants), then i looked at drifting. I noticed the increased skill, trial and error, and technique that is needed with this art. It striked me as something that i could see myseld partaking in. but i still wasnt sold. It was only until the night that one of my friends took me out in his 240 for a little drifting before fall. Incredible is an understatement for what i experienced that night. And now ever since i have been slowly growing in drifting community, by hanging out and enjoying talking about cars/drifting/grip and what have you…
anyways yeah, i just thought id type something up.
PS: Thanks to all of the W16 crew.
haha sasha, its the exact same thing as when you are in the terrain park at like blue mountain or whatever and some dude gets a foot off the jump and says “hot shit yo did you see me huck off that kicker, pure steeezzzeee, landing in the pow pow yo, cork 540 ain’t no thannnng…where my ipod at?”
thats what i hear all the time, but its parallel to what you said so i can relate
