Tires + weekly washes is all you’ll need. You don’t drive a ferrari. The only reason not to drive a car in the winter is too much power and/or ground clearence
agreed. or you want a break from full covarage insurence for a few months.
<25 ownage with full covarage on a “sports car”
 I drove my hotrod lincoln thru the winter and you could eat off the motor/underside of the car… it’s all in how well you take care of it. If you don’t wash it regularly and thuroughly (atleast when there is alot of salt out) then you’re bound to run into problems.
the only reasons why I wouldnt drive a car in the winter would be that it was too powerful, if it was vintage/worth alot of $$$, I planned on doing a full resto to it and/or keeping it for a very long time
here’s a pic of the motor right before I got rid of it… was driven thru snow most of it’s life (and it was a 93 keep in mind). I constantly had people dropping their jaws when I would say that
you drove it last year ball sack
hmm where is this place that does ruststop and around how much does it cost? and hows the undercoating stuff im probally driveing my iX in winter and gotta figure out what to do to winterize it cause its my first car lol
+1
My problem is paying a bunch of money for a car and having it sit in my garage 5-6 months out of the year while I drive some POS that may or may not get me to my destination without having to work on it every couple of weeks.
If it was a classic show car, or supercar exotic then sure, garage it. Otherwise get some tires and drive it.
ACtually, Schmitt’s has two options: $50 for just the undercoating, $100 for almost everything that could be exposed to salt (inside of doors, body panels, etc.) I even found some grease around the engine bay under the hood.
I’m not doing it this year since I just did it last year, and also because it gets a bit messy.
having a car and paying insurance, car payments, etc on it while it SITs in my driveway = me wanting to kill myself.
Therefore, I keep all cars on the road all days.
Just drive it and wash it. Or you could be like my fiance and not wash it. Ever. And have to replace rotors and pads every spring. :ham: She has a 2003 Protege. She had to replace the brakes to get it to pass inspection in 2004. And 2005. Grr…
I have it done on the BMW even though it doesn’t get driven during the winter. Do i HAVE to do it? no, but it’s nice to take the suspension apart and not having to fight rust.
There are a couple places that do it locally. One is on Walden Towards Lacaster “Trucks Unlimited”, i think. The other is on Broadway Rd in Cheektowaga (SEE WEBSITE).
They mask off your exhaust, put the car in the air then spray-gun coat it with CARWELL oil which creeps and spreads, protecting bare metal.
It stays on even when you drive through water and it’s recommended to do it once a year.
Pick up a beater. The IS sucks in snow unless you get UBER good snow tires. Take it from experience. 1.5" of snow 2 years ago in my driveway when I was in Buff…could not get up the driveway for the life of me.
It’s all in the beater and how you pick it. When I lived in Buff, I scooped some of the nicest beaters ever. Heat would make you sweat, never put $$ except for gas into them and drove like a champ and started better half of the time than my other car.
FYI-I never paid more than $750 for any of my beaters. Trucks included!!!
YOU HAVE NO REASON NOT TO DRIVE IT IN THE WINTER. GET SNOW TIRES.
I looked forward to driving my beater 6 months out of the year. It was like having a new car every six months. Plus the hassle of salt and washing is not there, insurance is cheaper, if someone hits it…who cares!
I almost sometimes would rather drive a beater for those sole reasons.
I had done the beater/daily driver + summer car for years, while its nice having a car tucked away safe and clean, it also sucks and is kindof embarassing driving a piece of shit for so much of the year. Doubly worse if youre making payments on the car you arent driving. It would be one thing if the ‘beater’ was a nice $5-$8k car, but making the switch from a $20k+ car to a sub $2k beater is the suck.
Nice car full year round is the way to go.
