i have a 1990 240, the engine just recently started clicking, its a fairly loud clicking noise, it only clicks when its idleing, and when you rev it as well, im not really to sure what it could be, any ideas? i think it might just be the oil im using or else a loose rocker arm or something, anyone have the same problem? i heard that most 240’s make this noise and its not really anything to be worried about… :?
Welcome to the awful sound of the Timing Chain guide!! Hopefully thats all it is on your car and not the chain itself goin’!! But ya, my car just went over the 200K mark and started the same noise.
Check your oil, and top it up if its low.
Could be the lifters as well.
All 3 of my 240’s have had the awesome lifter click
but in the one i have now, it was because there was NO oil in the engine (but it still worked fine at -40 degree weather :))
add a little oil see if that fixes it a little bit
probably just the valve train needs an adjustment. most imports need a valve adjustment at around 20thousand kms. it says that the 240sx shouldn’t need one unless it’s making tapping noises or work has been done on the valve train. if the noise is louder when the car is cold then chances are that that’s what needs to be done. either way a shop will do it for less than a hundred bux. but be prepared to leave your car there all day, as they have to wait for the car to be completely cold before doing the adjustment. just an idea, might not be it but try it anyways.
ok so i got my car looked at today, the clicking is from the guides beside the timing chain, not the chain itself, its just tapping the guides, he said it would be fine as long as i drive it decent and it would be nothing to worry about, just no high reving, but if i was to get it fixed it would be about 900 $ to fix it, so im not to sure if it is a good idea just to leave it, or spend all that money on fixing it when it isnt even that huge of a problem… :?
I dread that timing chain clicking problem as well. I’m just praying I have the money to fix it or do an entire rebuild when the time comes. Why couldn’t Nissan have made the KA the engine it should have been… We’ll never know.
Mine makes a clicking noise I am pretty sure its my timing chain but i got a fix for it in my barn 8)
I’m just hoping that mine makes it till late fall when i park the car for the winter. Then the plan is to do a swap. Sr or CA, won’t know till closer to that date. Paying $900 is alot of money for that, if its a SOHC I would just buy a DOHC for that amount of money. alwayssideways has a dohc for sale for cheaper than fixing that one.
PM Baker_Jeff he has everything you need to fix the problem.
Not… Speedworks threw out my engines.
Oh? Wasnt their salvagable parts on them???
trust me buddy… i went through the same thing… i figured the timing chain would b fine… but the rattle only gets louder and longer… and unless u like having a hundred ppl stare at ur car and wonder what that rattle is everytime you start it i suggest u get it fixed or find another motor… its around 300 if u do it urself but between 8-9 for a professional job… im pretty sure speedworks charged 800 for a complete timing chain kit replacement…good luck though!
