I just got the keys to my new apartment yesterday and when I arrived, I was shocked and appalled that they even gave them to me in its condition. The rental manager didn’t come with me, so when I entered the place… I was furious. Actually, beyond furious is more like it. Anyone else have a bad experience like I just had? (keep reading for details…)
They hired two different outside vendors to initially clean the carpets and then paint the place. The problem, they didn’t even check it over before handing it over to me. The carpets were cleaned poorly initially and then the painters got paint spots all over the carpets. That wasn’t the worst… the walls, lliterally, my 7 year old cousin could have painted them better. Every single wall was half done and unpainted around the edges of everything! Some walls just had patches of new paint with a “there, i fixed it” attitude.
I called the manager and demanded that he meet me there with “We have a serious problem here”. When he arrived, his words were: “wow, I am so embarrassed” as we walked around from room to room.
The paint in every room was beyond horrid
None of the repairs we discussed were done, including the handrails on the stairs and them restretching the carpeting upstairs.
The carpets, “cleaned” were now full of paint dots in every room. The manager said “I don’t know if they will replace them… they just spent money to clean them.” (WTF?)
They didn’t clean anything and towels from the old tenant were still in the bathroom
When I tried to get in the garage, he proclaimed “The old tenant didn’t give us the garage door opener, so you can’t get in there until she mails it back. She said she’d mailing it in a week or two.” My reply “Buy me a new one now. I’m paying for the garage.”
So, I gave the keys back and told him to “fix it and make it right.” I’m now sitting around waiting for the phone call from him on what is going on. I am beyond stressed right now, as I had all of my plans to move laid out for this weekend and now I am in limbo. 6 of my friends rescheduled their weekend to help out… and I just had to call them to tell them what happened.
Here are a few pictures of just two of the walls. It’s 1,500 sq. ft. and all of the walls are like this, if not worse…
A 10’ wall that goes from the front of the place to the back? “No Problem! We’ll just paint over where it’s dirty and you’ll never notice!”
Same wall, other side. “This wall looks perfect now! Let’s carry on painting the rest…”
wow, sorry to here. they woulda been better off giving you couple months free rent to do it right yourself. i lol’d at the garage situation as well. Do people think this kinda business practices are acceptable? amazing.
I didn’t ahve a bad key turn over but I did have the house continue to fall apart around me. as a result my rent kept getting reduced until I paid nothing for the last month and moved out.
That’s what I’d be most concerned with. If the landlord runs a place like that do you really want to live there? Especially with your “I don’t want to own because I want everything shiny new and taken care of for me” attitude from the other thread. Good luck with that with this owner. Might be time to cut and run.
when a friend moved into his apartment a while ago, there was an issue where he couldnt move in for a few days after they initially said he could, which sucked, he had rented a u-haul, had some friends ready to go for that day, ect
the apartment he rented was on the 3rd floor of an old building in allentown, really a super nice place. just stairs, no elevator. the management there, in order to fix the mistake, let him move all of his stuff into a storage place in the basement, them hired professional movers to move his stuff upstairs a few days later. he had to stay at his mom’s house and live out of a suitcase for a few days, but in the long run everything worked out well (and nobody had to carry anything up all of those stairs, he just stood there and pointed lol)
i would try to get a similar thing, drop your stuff in the garage (if you can even get in it) and make them pay for movers for the inconvenience (if you even want to live there now)
LMAO…not that this happened but the results of the “painters”. I mean Unless like you said, you are 7 years old, how can you do a job like that and leave it? I mean seriously…If this is how the management is going to handle things in the future, I’d tell them to fuck off.

I am waiting to go for Round 2… which should be tonight after work.
I heard back from the Manager and he said that they repainted everything and addressed several other issues at that “it’s all set.” I asked him to meet me there so we can go through the place and he said “I won’t have time today as I have two other lease signings, but you can come get the keys. Go and take pictures.”
So, I’m kind of at a standstill on my decision to just go get the keys. With my large sum security deposit, I want to go through with him together to document EVERYTHING that could be construed as “damage” so that I get my full S.D. back at the end. I plan on taking photos of everything and writing out a document which I want him to sign also.
Am I in the wrong for demanding that he be there during key turn-over? It sounds like good business, to protect us both and have a signed “OK, I agree on these remarks” situation.
The last apartment I leased they gave me a huge sheet of paper with damage types listed and check boxes next to them. When they handed me the keys, they gave me like 2 days or something to come back with the sheet of paper filled out with any little things that could be recognized as “damage” (scuff marks, stains, chips, etc…) so that I wouldn’t be responsible for it.
