f-body guys and exhaust Guru's..

Ehh? Muffler has a lot to do with the sound that a car produces. Cheaper to purchase and easier to replace.

Think about replacing your whole exhaust system like you’re planning and it ends up sounding worse? After you’ve spent 3-4 times the price of a muffler which could have taken care of what you’re trying to accomplish.

Just a thought.

Unf most of the rasp is generated in the. Y pipe on these cars . Ya ever notice vettes. Don’t sound like that lol . True dials sound badass on em but money to go all the way back . That and your tips are causing a lot of the rasp ya hear as well . It’s just the way it is man .

I did my true duals dumped, they aren’t as bad as you think dumped. I would consider that route or pay a shit ton of money to take it all the way back

did you consider one of these

You buy the 200 dollar kit and make a brake for your axle for 10 bucks and it drops the upper panhard bar mount down low enough to run true dual 3" up over the axle. Dropping the mount on the axle is a must though on a street car even though it’s not included in the kit or it royally fucks your suspension geometery. Also not to start another fight with paul about his old car, but I couldn’t stand the duals with dumps. I had the car less then a week and they were gone. God aweful loud and created a really bad interior drone.

The issue he wants resolved is the inherent rasp made by the merging of both exhaust headers into one. Some systems are better than others and some Y-pipes are smoother than others. True duals have a much smoother sound and because each bank has its own pipe and you get a stereo effect. A single exhaust is more like having multiple speakers on a AM channel. If any of you have ever listened to one… Think mustang sound. They are factory true duals and always sound good

Honestly you should lower the rear if going under the axle with duals. The lower the car is the higher the axle will be in relation to the vehicle and more possible clearance. Remember that the axle doesn’t jsut bound up over bumps and also travels downward over dips, potholes, and coming over the peaks of hills fast. In Florida or Texas its easier to run an under axle set up as there is little road imperfections to be concerned of.

I’d be worried about fixing the Y pipe to header situation before worrying about sound.

Thanks Joe for all the heads up.

Frank, what do you mean? I already have a texas speed Y pipe on it that has the new redesigned flowmaster Y merge. My Y pipe is as free flowing as you can get for these cars.

Like I said before, dumps aren’t even a consideration. I would never put them on my car.

also don’t forget im sitting on a 28" tire out back…my rear end isn’t as low to the ground as you think it is. Even tho my car is lowered alot up front, and sitting on the stock springs with the hose mod out back, I can drive straight over speed bumps without touching.

Ur clearance issues are mostly going to be up front where the x-pipe it self will end up… Very difficult fornfitment wjen running the spohn dsl/tq arm set up

Dual 3" pipes with bullets that dump in front of the rear axle.
Keep tips that you have as “fakes”.

He can get a slim X pipe and keep both pipe on passenger side of the drive shaft and torque arm then do both pipes over or under axle and run to the tips from there. The tips are in the middle instead of at either corner anyway.

Slim X pipe

I know this is slightly more old school but you could also have the person who is fabbing the exhaust to make a balance pipe where the exhaust get really close together like right by the trans cross member where the y pipe would be

Install a turbo and it won’t be as raspy sounding

get the kooks dual exhaust and have someone mate it up to your headers if you dont have kooks .

probably the most logical solution go faster and sound badass. 7 psi w/ a meth system and he would be making a ton of power.

automerge double post

Its a great system but he would have to sell his spohn set up and go with buy bmr dsl and tq arm that is a tailshaft mount which isnt that great compared to his spohn and that system is pretty pricey

You rang??? :rofl

I keep telling him I want to make some zoomie headers up and out the hood, but he doesnt want to cut the hood.

Drew any pics of whats under there now to get an idea of what you are working with?

If it were me, i would sell the entire thing, back from the headers and start over. mix and matching stuff sometimes isnt worth the hassle sometimes. Pick a DIA tubing and a design (X, H, balance pipe, etc) and straight pipe it to start. Maybe try out a different X pipe design (merger angles and other factors change how they work one X to the other). Then see how it sounds. It wouldnt take me too long to make another X pipe design to play with how it sounds, and I can use the other ones later on other cars anyways so its not a waste. When you get a nice, even sound we can add mufflers, cats, resonators, or what ever where they physically fit to quiet it down.

fuck that. I can forge my motor for the price of those dumb duals. Its just exhaust piping. If I wasnt tired from laying on my back under my last camaro working on it I would do this shit myself.

I make more power on the 150 shot now, and more torque then I ever would on 7psi. I would not put meth on my car either.

in the car’s current state, to only put a turbo on it on 7-10psi I would be down grading in power. I would forge the motor then turbo it if anything.

no pic’s of the current full exhaust setup. I am still driving the car so maybe I will swing by your shop sunday and we can throw it on a lift.
