Fashion thread: Dress shirts/suits

I’ve been keeping an eye out for some old AEs that I can send in to be refurbished.

picked up 3 ties from thetiebar.com.

Wow, I really like that cashmere/wool topcoat!

perhaps topical… saw it on FB today:

Russel Brand booted from the GQ Awards for pointing out that main sponsor Hugo Boss was a supplier to the Nazi party.

verified by Wikipedia too : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_Boss

They’re brand new! They just opened on Small Business Saturday.

Why is he involved with anything? I’d mistake him for a beach bum if I didn’t know any better.

there has been a lot of fashion industry stuff popping up on my Reuters feed of late.

high end brands scale well and are all posting very strong performance. one of the key drivers is mens fashion actually:

Men now represent 40 percent of the luxury goods market, according to a Bain report published in October and trendy sportswear and denim are growing in importance alongside classic made-to-measure tailoring.

from an article up today: http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/01/13/milan-mensfashion-idUSL6N0KM0DP20140113

The other driver is asian spending which accounts for 30% of worldwide luxury goods sales…lol source: http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/01/12/us-ferragamo-ceo-idUSBREA0B0DS20140112

that was certainly the case in Vegas when I was there for SEMA. got into a couple good chats with my cousin who operates a few kiosks at the Forum Shops and with the locals who worked the Vacheron Boutique. 90% of buying is being done by asian tourists. apparently there are such heavy import and luxury levies applied to luxury goods in china (even the ones that are made there) that it’s cheaper for them to fly aboard and spend full MSRP than it is to buy the stuff at home.

Did you see this Bing? Thoughts?

The local custom suit guys from Tom James are garbage. You’re right on that. Those suits are $450-$850, custom tailored, and fall apart in a year. The material is shit and while they do fit, the buttons fall off, etc. Complete shit. I bought two of these when I was young and stupid, they fell apart. These were made in the Netherlands.

Locally Europa and Adrian Jules both make very high count fiber suits and shirts that are exceptional material, very durable, and you can add custom touches. Expect to pay $1250 (made in Canada) - $1850 (made in Rochester) per suit, $125-$250 per shirt. I have a couple of these suits and a bunch of these shirts. These were my next step and I splurged, and the suits were amazing, the shirts were amazing - but the value wasn’t there.

My Hong Kong dude makes the same super high quality suits and shirts, with dramatically more selection in terms of materials and patterns. His suits are as good (if not better, I get more compliments from his styles than anything else I wear) and they’re $1,050 for the super high end fabric. The shirts are $100 each. I’m probably getting ripped off since they’re from China.

With custom suits you also get access to a super special super gay butt buddy secret club. Other people who get custom tailored can spot when you’re wearing custom tailoring, and you with them. You both know that you’re totally awesome and the people wearing off the rack stuff are like primates - they’re not even self aware yet.

In summary, Chinese people know about clothing.

also the HOT new shit is this guy in town who makes custom shoes. He’s all Italian and shit.

They’re like, $2,000 a pair. Fuck that noise.

“He’s all Italian and shit”

lol.

that post was awesome.

$2000 shoes…Kiss my dick

if they’re bespoke and made with baby alligator or stingray they can get into the $5k range… i guess if you already have a Pagani Zonda in the garage and a Huayra on order you might as well have the equivalent on your foot.

If I’m making that type of money than a 5k shoe is almost irrelevant. I’d be paying someone to stitch the suit around me as I walk.

I’m still gonna get a bespoke Tom Hardy from Manhattan one day. Maybe when I make partner.

I was thinking about your comments about bespoke while i was getting a haircut today and i want to rephrase my counter-point.

Basically i just think i’m better off having Tom Ford tell me how my suits and shirts should fit and be made rather than me telling a tailor what i want in a suit or shirt. Same way I want BMW to tell me what my car should be like instead of trying to turn a Nissan into what i think i want… because that never works out as well even if it is much less expensive.

That might work if you have the same size and shape as the person he designed the suit for.

Having been a boxer, my wingspan is 2" longer than my height, so a shirt that fits my chest will be too short on my arms.
Having been a judoka, I can wear pants that have 2" of clearance in the waist but fit tight around my thighs.
Being a race car driver, a shirt that fits my neck is too large for my chest.
These are things a tailor will address when making shirts and suits bespoke.

being built like a chinaman; everything fits me fine

I love how when I order fancy cutting edge Chinese casual wear from eBay, an “XL” is tight on me.

I’m 5’6" 155 lbs.
