I used a tax calculator and it says i will owe like 80 bucks for state, so I am not paying an addl 30 just to e-file. Ill just paper file for free I suppose. Unless there is a free one someplace. Anyone know of a free nys e file?
I havent gotten my last w2 yet, can I use my last pay stub?
idk about nys e file for free but … federal has to be free… I tried using my last pay stub but it was fucked up for some reason… something about me not paying enough social security or medicare… idk
I haven’t dealt with it much at all this year yet but I believe it would effectively reduce his refund by $600 x (his marginal tax rate) since he picked it up as income in 2008. So it may have lessened his refund by about $90-$150.
also, dont select ‘take my fees out of my return’ or whatever it says. that caused me to not get my refund check direct deposited. i was pissed about that.
:word: I did my taxes last night, stimulus had nothing to do with it and it said I was actually due $267 because I only received $333 back from the stimulus.:gotme:
H & R Block has a calculator that we used to get an idea on what we would get back…
When we claimed the $1200 we got for the stimulus we would get back $5300
When we only claimed $1 for the stimulus we got back $6517 ($5300 + $1200= $6500!?!?)
When we claimed no stimulus we got back $6518
So basically the stimulus was a “loan” from your 2008 taxes!
It seems if you get back more then you were given from the stimulus they take it back, and if you get back less then you got for stimulus they wash it.
OK… you could not have claimed the stimulus last year considering you didn’t get it until after you claimed your taxes… therefore you have to claim it this year because it was income for 2008.
This credit is figured like last year’s economic stimulus payment, except that your 2008 tax information is used to figure this credit. Your 2007 tax information was used to figure your economic stimulus payment. The maximum credit is $600 ($1,200 if married filing jointly) plus $300 for each qualifying child.
You may be able to take this credit only if:
*
You did not get an economic stimulus payment, or
*
Your economic stimulus payment was less than $600 ($1,200 if married filing jointly for 2007), plus $300 for each qualifying child you had for 2008.
For more information, see the instructions for Form 1040, line 70; Form 1040A, line 42; or Form 1040EZ, line 9.

the stimulus was not a loan and it’s also not considered taxable income.
I did most of my taxes through turbo tax today (waiting for one more w2) and it asked me how much I received. Im not sure what would happen if I put zero…
